Selecting Data in the Graphic Editor Window

As you learned in the tutorial, MIDI Recording, the Notes (piano roll) display of the Graphic Editor window shows MIDI notes graphically ashorizontal bars. Before selecting notes you must choose a Select Tool by clicking theappropriate icon in the Graphic Editor window to turn the cursor into thattool. There are three Select Tools: the Arrow Tool, the Forceps Tool, and the Velocity Edit Tool. The following table summarizes the selection tools in the Graphic editorwindow.

Dragging the Arrow Tool selects all MIDI events in a time range

Control-dragging makes the Arrow Tool function just like the Forceps Tool;click the Arrow Tool to return it to its original function
Forceps Tool
Dragging the Forceps Tool selects only pitch data in the rectangular area youcreate by dragging
Click the Forceps Tool icon; available only in Notes or Drums display mode

Velocity Edit Tool
Edits individual note velocity if no notes are selected or scales velocity ofall notes in a selected range
Click the Velocity Tool icon (located to the right of the forceps); availableonly in Notes or Drums display mode
To turn off the velocity stem display, uncheck the Velocity Stems option inthe Switches menu
You can precisely select bars or beats by clicking bar numbers or beatmarkings in the Graphic editor window’s time line with the Arrow or Forceps Tools. To extend the selection beyondone bar or beat, Command-click the final beat of the area you want to select.
