Assigning Outputs in the Track Window

Note: the term 'output' has been changed from 'instrument' as of version 6.0.8

The currently assigned Output displayed in the Output column determines the MIDI channel or Audio port on which the associated track plays back (the Output’s MIDI channel and port can be configured using the Mixer (Instruments) window, or by Option-clicking on the displayed Metro Output name).

Audio ports are only available on machines running Sound Manager 3.2 or higher. Assigning a track’s Output to an Audio port changes that track from a MIDI track to an Audio track. Audio tracks parallel the functionality of MIDI tracks, however, they play and record digital audio files rather than MIDI data.

You can reassign the Output on a track by clicking the Output name, holding down the mouse, and choosing a new Output from the pop-up menu that opens. The Metro Outputs displayed in this menu are directly related to the Outputs you set up within the Mixer window.

You can assign multiple Metro Outputs to a single track by Shift-clicking the Output name, holding down the mouse, and choosing a new Output from the pop-up menu that opens. Both Outputs will now be displayed in the track’s Output column. Shift-click and choose the Output name again to remove it from the track’s Output column.

note02.gif Tip: A track cannot be simultaneously assigned to both a MIDI and Audio port.

The width of the Output display and other columns in the Tracks window can be resized by positioning the mouse over the right-hand border of the display and dragging the mouse to the right or the left. The mouse cursor changes to a Resizing tool when positioned over the edge of a column.

note02.gif Note: Option-clicking on the name of a Metro Output opens the Define Outputs dialog. Shift-clicking to select another Metro Output allows multiple Metro Outputs to be assigned to a single track. Within Metro, there are Ports and Metro Outputs.
