Creating New Outputs

Now that your default Record From devices are configured, the next step is to create Metro Outputs. Ideally, there should be a Metro Output representing every MIDI channel associated with each of your MIDI devices, and one Metro Output for each Audio Track. For example, a 16 channel multi-timbral MIDI device will require 16 Metro Outputs, one for each MIDI channel. Metro Outputs also address audio ports.

Metro Outputs are assignable on the fly as output destinations for any track. Metro Outputs override channel data associated with individual MIDI note events within a track as well as allow you to name of the channels of your MIDIdevices.

See Using Outputs, Ports, and Faders for more details on configuring and using Metro Outputs.

Metro Outputs can be automatically derived from the Current Studio Setup document. This feature automates a large portion of Metro’s initial MIDI setup and configuration.

To automatically create new outputs:

  1. Choose Modify Outputs and Busses under the Special menu.

The Modify Outputs and Aux Busses dialog box appears.

  1. Click the Make outputs reflect MIDI setup document button, then click OK.

You have automatically configured Metro Outputs. Open the Instruments Mixer window and notice there’s now a fader representing each MIDI channel of all of your MIDI devices. Assign Metro Outputs to tracks within the Tracks and Graphic Editor windows; use the Instruments Mixer window to mix volume and pan settings.

Note that in Panther (OS 10.3) it may be necessary to manually create Metro Outputs if your USB MIDI Interface also has built-in sounds.

The next step in your first session is Setting Up The Metronome.
