Inserting Program Events (Changes) into a Track

You can audition various sounds using the Program Setting in the top portion of the Instruments Mixer window, listening to different programs during playback. The Instruments Mixer window's program setting is a temporary setting and affects current playback only.

Use the Event Editor window to insert a Program Change event, setting yourtrack permanently to that sound. The Event Editor lists in chronological order all recorded Note events and other types of MIDIdata, such as After Touch or Pitch Bend. Using this window, you can insertnew data or edit existing data.

You'll probably want to insert one Program Change event at the beginning of the track; all Note events that follow a Program Change event will play that program.

To insert a program change:

  1. Choose Event Editor from the Windows menu or press Command-E.

The Event Editor window appears.

  1. Click the Insert popup menu and hold down the mouse.

  2. Choose Program from the popup menu to insert a Program Change event at Bar one.

The Event Editor displays the Bar, Beat, Clock location of the event, the letters 'Pgm' to indicate the type of event, the number of the Channel the event will play on, and the program setting showing the program number.

  1. Click the Program Number setting (it's in the column marked either Data or Pitch), and increase or decrease the value to the Program Change event you want the track to play, for example, 34.

  2. Press Enter.

The numbering scheme of programs (for example, 0-127 or 1-128) and the program assigned to each number depend on your MIDI device; it's up to you to be familiar with how your MIDI device stores programs.
