Note Edit Quantizing Mode

Checking Note Edit Quantizing turns on automatic note and Drum Strikequantizing in the Graphic Editor window. When Note Edit Quantizing is checked, all edits made in the Graphic Editor window's Notes (piano roll) or Drums displays will be quantized to the value shown in the Note Value field (or Notes pop-up menu) in the upper portion of the Graphic Editor window. Remember that you can set Note Value by entering a specific number of Clocks, but you will probably prefer to set the value using the Notes pop-up menu. The Notes pop-up menu allows you to set the Note Value by selecting your desired note type (whole note, half note, etc.); holding down the Shift key while selecting the Notes pop-up menu adds the newly selected Note Value to the originally selected Note Value. Note Edit Quantizing offers two modes:

Absolute Mode means that all edits made in the Graphic Editor window's Notes (piano roll) and Drums displays will automatically be quantized to the nearest absolute Bar/Beat unit. For example, if you select the whole note as your Note Value, all event edits will be placed on the nearest exact Bar start position. In 4/4, this translates to sticking all edits exactly on beat one of a measure. This is Metro's native quantizing mode and is useful for most edits. Note Edit Quantizing in Absolute Mode will generally produce more 'machine-like' results.

Relative Mode means that all edits made in the Graphic Editor window's Notes (piano roll) and Drums displays will automatically be constrained in steps equal to the selected Note Value. For example, if you select the whole note as your Note Value, all event edits will be made in relative steps equal to a whole note. In 4/4, moving a note that starts at clock 117 of bar 1 to the area of bar 2 would place the note at clock 117 of bar 2 (Absolute Mode would have placed the same edit move at clock 0 of bar 2). Relative Mode is useful for moving notes and note ranges around in a way that retains the natural placement of the original events, but still allows them to be moved in an accurate fashion from bar to bar, beat to beat, or in any other beat breakdown.

New quantize modes introduced in version 7.2

Absolute With Selection is exactly the same as absolute mode with the exception that the selection is also quantized along with notes and drums.

To Vertical Grids will quantize the selection, notes and drums to the current vertical grids setting (if vertical grids are not visible use the note edit grids menu, accessed from the setup menu, to select 'vertical') . Zooming in will increase the number of vertical grids and zooming out will decrease the number of vertical grids.
