Partial Track Recording

exclaim2.gif Caution: When Partial Track Recording is off, Metro deletes all data in any track you record in as soon as you begin recording.

Partial Track Recording (Switches menu) allows you to record in various areas of an audio or MIDI track withoutdestroying the data in other areas of that track. With Partial Track Recording unchecked, Metro will always (with the exception of Punching In) record fromthe beginning of the Sectio n and replace the entire record track. When Partial Track Recording is checked, recording begins from the current selection/insertion point andends when you press Stop. Only the data within the region encompassing the recorded area is replaced(unless Overdub recording has been specified under the Punch In or Record/Play Setup dialogs, in which case the partial record pass would simply be overdubbed ontop of the existing data).

Partial Track Recording toggles on and off and should be on by default. To toggle the option, simplyselect the menu item in the Switches menu; when it displays a checkmark, the option is on. Partial Track Recording lets you record over just part of a track. Here's how it works:

  • If Partial Track Recording is On, you record from the current measure in the current track. Recording stopswhen you click the Play or Record buttons on the Transport, or press the Spacebar. This lets you record on just part of a track, so that you can changecertain passages while keeping others. If you are in Punch In mode, playback willstart from the current measure, and recording will start when Metro reaches thePunch In selection.

  • If Partial Track Recording is Off and you aren't using Punch In, you always record from measure 1 of the current track.

  • If Partial Track Recording is Off and you are in Punch In mode, playback will start from the current time and recording willstart when Metro reaches the Punch In region.

Turning Partial Track Recording off in Replace record mode is a great way to record fresh takes on tracks youwant to abandon, without having to worry about deleting unwanted data. You setthe record mode in the Record/Play dialog, reached by choosing Record/Play in the Setup menu.
