horizontal scrolling in graphic editor

I often find that when selecting a region in the graphic editor which extends beyond the right or left boundary of the screen, that the automatic scrolling moves far too fast. Would it be possible to reduce the scroll rate, or to have a preference option for slower scroll rates?
