Sys ex in SE

Postby Timothy_Burns » Mon May 26, 2003 3:16 am

Is there a way to insert Sys Exs directly into the graphical editing window. I used MusicShop previously, and I could enter in Sys Ex code directly into a little pop up.

I have an old Proteus 1 and would like to enter the bank select commands. According to the manual the requested preset # for bank 0 is 1024 (0x400). I don't know exactly what that means, but it is followed by a "MIDI Message" F0 18 04 dd 00 00 08 F7. That is the sort of stuff I used to enter in MusicShop in the Sysex window to issue a variety of commands to the Proteus. I imagine, that if I sent that string to the Proteus, that I would switch banks, right?

Correspondingly, bank 1 is 1025 (0x401) F0 18 04 dd 00 01 08 F7 and bank 2 is 1026 (0x402) F0 18 04 dd 00 02 08 F7, but I just can't figure out where to enter the sys exs. When I try and do anything with Sys exs, it asks me to locate a file.

To enter sysex:

from the event editor window. Select insert sysex from the insert menu.
Then click once on the word SysEx(3) to edit it. The 'dd' in your bank select message indicates a variable (value that changes) and is not 'dd'. You must change that value to a valid sysex data byte (<080 hex).

Note that once you have entered a sysex for bank change and have it working, you can assign that sysex event (or events) to a program name list. This way you can change banks from the bank popup just like standard banks. I do this frequently for changing modes on Korg synths.

Thanks for the info. That's exactly what I needed to know.

Don't forget to save preferences after setting up your bank selects and program name lists.
