Anyone out there using iMic?

Postby sseaton » Wed Feb 19, 2003 3:01 pm

Anyone using iMic with Metro 6 or Metro 6 SE? I would really like to use my iBook for simple on-the-road recordings. I downloaded the demo version of Metro 6, and I have no problem with MIDI tracks, but I will need to buy an interface for recording audio tracks. Please help! Obviously I would like to use iMic because it is cheap, but I am willing to buy whatever is needed... as long as it isn't too expensive.

Thanks!

IMic

Postby Jerm » Wed Feb 19, 2003 6:32 pm

I have tested with an IMic and it works fine for recording and for playback however it does not work properly for software audio play-thru. This is due to the fact that they use the generic USB driver from apple which does not provide a unified callback. In other words, the audio input knows nothing about the audio output and visa versa. This results in software audio thru not working properly.

iMic & software audio play through

Can someone contact Griffin Technologies and report the problem . I'd hate to toss my iMic if I want that option when I get a G4 Mac.

To the best of my knowledge ALL of the new G4 machines come with audio in and out. So there is no need to buy an IMic.

USB vs audio input Sound Quality

Postby fastlanephil » Thu Feb 20, 2003 1:30 am

I thought Apple took out the audio inputs because the USB port was cleaner. I know the audio input jack is back. Have they improved the audio input or is there really not that much of a difference for the home user.

Thanks for the info on iMic. Is there another way to get audio into the iBook?

I know MOTU makes some (not inexpensive) firewire audio devices. There are also a bunch of USB audio devices.

Try the Motu 828 - you can usually find a good price on the internet.
Compare Sweetwater.com or musiciansfriend.com, etc.

Edirol UA 1A, iVoice

I've tried iVoice: avoid it at all cost! And a little bit more expensive is the Edirol UA-1A, which is what I use now, mostly because I can use better cables with it. Works and sounds great at an affordable price.
