Control surface (Tascam US-224)?

Postby Krutina » Thu May 29, 2003 11:04 am

Hi;

Bought Metro SE 5 maybe two years ago and was quite impressed with it. Now looking at OS X solutions, but own a Tascam US-224 and want something that supports the controls.

Cubase SX, DP4, and LA 6 are stoopid expensive and overly complex for my needs, so was wondering if US-224/428 support is under consideration for Metro 6.x?

Noticed there's at least one 428 owner posting here.

Thanks
Krutina

What kind of 428 support?
I was under the impression by comments made here that it does work.

Have you downloaded Metro 6 and tried it out?

It may require assigning faders to do the task and then saving the setup.
Rather rough but it would get you started.

According to the review in electronic musician about the 224, it works best with the apps that recognise it in 428 emulation mode. Otherwise it skips every second bank of 4 faders. (A bug that may already be fixed).

What I was really hoping to get was an answer to the question I should have asked:

"how long until Metro has the same idiot-proof US-224 integration as LA 6 or SX - where idiot user (me) requires only to select it from an interfaces configuration screen. Thereafter all knobs and such work as advertised".

I'd actually be happy if it just could be done, period, regardless of how long I have to spend mercilessly forcing myself to try and figure out MIDI...

So after cruising these boards a little while longer, yep, it seems to be possible, somehow.

Thanks

I would think that would involve tascam getting the driver to work with Metro rather than the other way round.

I would email them about it but be sure to remove the word idiot. :)

I'm that US-428 guy. I posted a pretty long one on this here:
http://www.sagantech.com/metroforum/viewtopic.php?t=34

To summarize, I'd guess the quickest way to allow even more support for controllers is to allow the controller to be associated with a particular interface. It would then allow good fader mapping without taking up a channel on all interfaces. Supporting the JLCooper CS-10 protocol would be my dream solution.

Scoot - my guess is that it is more likely for Metro to support controllers.

Just a crazy idea that I should probably spend more time thinking about before typing it but... If Metro allows AppleEvents to drive its controls it would be relatively easy for a third party to write an app that could accept the MIDI messaging from the control surface and forward it as AppleEvents to Metro. There are complications in Metro responding if the control was successful... yep, I should have thought more :)

Hi Gary.

I was under the impression that people like tascam do the work to get their controller to work with audio apps and that is then added to the driver for the 428.

Taken from tascam though - Support for a number of other applications is also presently under development. Please inquire with your software companies of choice for current information on US-428 integration with their applications.

I see the 428 does a lot of its compatibility through ASIO and I think Jerm said ASIO is not in OSX.

Hi Scoot,

I've never worked with Tascam but I think Tascam works with other companies to encourage their support but it appears the work is done in the audio app. The (nowhere near as cool as Metro) Deck LE and Cubasis app included use it in CS-10 mode (sorry if you still have pals doing Deck Jerm - someday you have to tell us if OSC was as fun as it seemed from the outside). I have not used PT or LA to know how they are supported but I would still guess

US-428 uses CoreAudio/CoreMIDI in OS X. I tried it briefly and it works with Metro much like in OS 9 (where it does use ASIO).
