Audio Routing Problems

Postby Lynn M. Patterson » Fri May 16, 2003 5:51 pm

I am currently trying to route audio out through the sound card as well as having the capability to route through the computer speakers.

I am able to get the sound that I have brought in through the audiophile to route through the analog 1/2 bus but I cannot get the sound to go through the computer speakers.

Also, I am unable to get audio of different types to come out through the same output devise. Meaning, Audio & Analog 1/2 will not come through the same output at the same time

For example. audio that I imported as a wav will come out through the computer speakers. Audio that I record in through the audiophile device will not ouput through the speakers but will route through the audiphile.

When I did switch the wav file to output through the audiophile sound card, I lost control of the output of the signal I brought in through the sound card. In otherwords, one type of audio or the other will play but not both. I have spent all day on this. Please help.

Thanks

Lynn,

I would be glad to help you but there is not enough information to go on. What Computer are you using?
What OS?
What version of Metro?
I know you have an audiophile card but what are the speakers? How are they connected to your computer?

I am unaware of 'types of audio'. What do you mean?

Thank you for responding!

I am using a G4 800 Mhz dual processor Apple computer. The speakers came with the computer (the little clear ones). The OS is 9.?? (I have OS X but have never installed it). The version of Metro is 5. The Audiophile card allows you to select various ports to bring signals into the program. I am using ASIO setting which allows me to use DAP Anolog 1/2 when coming through the audiophile sound card and Audio when importing wav files from the computer.

So I am bring in two different tyoes of audio. The audio that I import wants to play through the computer speakers and not mingle with the audio that I bring in through the sound card which is pertfectly happy to go out the back door (the output of the audiophile sound card).

On the mac, when I assign the sound to go out of the Delta AP (Audiophile sound card, it does), but then I lose control of my audio recorded through the audiophile card.

I just plain cannot figure out how to get the audio recorded through the audiophile card to play over the computer speakers and/or get everything to play together through the same sound card at the same time. This is my goal. I haven't even tries to add MIDI imto the mix yet.

Now...... if I save the file that I have brought in through the audiophile sound card onto the computer, I can open it outside of the program and hear it over the computer speakers. Please help!!!! Ver frustrated.

Thanks

Avoid using more than one audio device.

From what I understand I think this should be pretty easy.

You have the built-in audio going out to your speakers and the audiophile audio going somewhere else.

I recommend getting a mixer and connecting up the appropriate speakers to it.

You should avoid, if at all possible, using more than one audio device as this leads to synchronization issues that may be difficult to resolve. Therefore you should probably use just the audiophile sound card for both input and output (via the ASIO driver).

If you can't afford a mixer you could try to disconnect the speakers from the built-in audio and connect them to the audiophile. You may need an adapter cable (or cables) to connect the speakers to the audiophile sound card.

The other thing you should probably do is read up on instruments (Metro's term) in the online help. Instruments determine where the audio output is routed and understanding how they work is important when dealing with setups like yours.

Wow.... a dual DP 800 in OS9 running Metro 5.
It's almost criminal. :D
I wouldn't expect OS9 and metro 5 to be making use of the other CPU.

There is no harm at all in downloading the metro 6 demo and seeing if the audio routing problems you have can be overcome. It runs in OS9.

Does the mac have an audio out? Can all the sounds come out there?
If so I would ditch the speakers and use headphones or an amp and speakers on the audio out.

Jerm
I would have thought if instruments were assigned to all the different audio ports, they would be able to be heard and mixed in the instruments window as audio and internal sound sources are. no?

Could the audiocard outputs be recorded onto tracks and then be heard?

I would first like to say thank you for the feed back.

However, I think I need to try to clarify my set-up and few other things.

1st
In a previous session, I imported audio into the Metro program via the instrument ..Audio (from the internal CD super drive). It plays fine through the computer speakers.

2nd
In a resent session, I imported audio via the instrument DAP Analog 1/2 through the L/R input of the Audiophile sound card (set-up for this is audio coming off a digital mixer into a small analog mixer (yeah I know I could of used the SPDIF) and out of the mixer to the input of the card. I am able to both record signal(s) and play them back out of the Analog outputs of the card into the mixer of which I am monitoring with studio headphones.

Independently I have been able to get sound out of the program both through the computer speakers and the sound card. I have not been able to get the two different types of audio to work together. Is this a syncing or routing problem or both?

My Goal
To have both my imported audio (Instrument - Audio) and my audio routed in through the Audiophile card (Instrument - Analog L/R) play through the computer speakers at the same time or have the ability to route them through the Audiophile card based upon the needs of the session. Either way I need to hear both of them at the same time.

The computer seems to support the program without crashing. Am I just having a severe routing issue. :?

To do this, you should simply assign the correct instrument to the audio track.
