Sync MIDI to an audio track

Postby Stephanie » Fri Sep 23, 2022 5:02 pm

Hi - I have a MIDI song that I'm trying to synchronise to an audio track. The audio is of a live performance and I want the MIDI song to reflect the tempo variations in it. Loading the audio file into the MIDI song and adjusting the tempo would seem reasonable (e.g. by the bar move tool or drawing in a tempo track) but the audio shifts and stretches as well. Turning off Switches > Regions Tie to Tempo doesn't help. I want the audio track to remain unchanged as I adjust the MIDI tempos.

What am I missing, or can I just not do this?

Metro LX on macOS Mojave.

Well if the original MIDI track has the correct relative tempo changes all you should need to do is adjust the relative tempo in the transport. Now if there are multiple tempo changes that need to be applied, something has to give. The audio does not change at all when adjusting MIDI tempo. It just reflects the changes relative to the bar lines.

Usually if you record the audio first, it is best, as you say, to use the bar moving tool to adjust the start of each beat in the song from left to right. Now this assumes you have no tempo changes in the MIDI track to start.
