Please post any ideas for new features in Metro or Metro SE here.

FR LeadGen: Glide to next note

Postby Lytz1 » Fri Nov 02, 2018 9:00 am

Another idea that came up lately:

I used to work a lot with music trackers.

Most of them have a feature called "Glide to next note"
which pitch-bends the current note to glide to the next note. This is very very cool.
This sounds like some kind of auto-portamento, but it is not. Sounds very different,
to me much more sophisticated, especially on long notes.

If we would have an additional entry in the pitch bend drop-down menu with "glide"
this would fit quite well I think. Metro would need to calculate the distance to the next note
and adjust that by the Pitchbend range for the instrument.

Metro is already perfectly set up for that because it has a built-in manual adjustment of the pitch bend range that is used by the instrument.

Maybe worth a thought.

Best,
tL.

Please send me an example or post an audio file. An example with the MIDI would be preferable.

Midi is difficult, as trackers do this with the tracker-typical build in sampler, not with pitchbend.
This also only works with tracker-build in instruments, but is still the most full-auto approach I know of.

Other apps that can do this manually are i.e. FL Studio and Bitwig Studio. But this also only works on
build in instruments, as this also doesn't use pitchbend and needs to be done manually.

They actually can do this on a per-note basis. I.e. One note of a chord glides up and another one glides down,
but this is obviously not possible with pitchbend. But the logic of the glide operation is the same.

Below this post is a pic that shows what it looks like in Bitwig Studio, Trackers only show hex-numbers, so that won't help visually.

Short Audioclip from the example attached as well. (like it is on the picture and then once more with notes and
glide data stretched to 200%) It's zipped, as mp3s are not allowed.
