Aloisen New Troubles

Postby Territan » Tue Jul 24, 2018 9:39 pm

Here I am on High Sierra (10.13.6), trying to get into the Notation window.

When I try to open it, though, the dialog box appears: "Metro requires the 'Aloisen New' font to be installed in order to access standard music notation."

Fine and dandy, I have it ...wait, no. where'd it go? And I had trouble finding this specific font before, too...

No matter, I find it online, add it to FontExplorer, activate it, and ...Metro refuses to recognize it.

Fine, I'll just drop it into the system folder where ...it... refuses to go.

Open terminal, sudo cp [file] [destination], enter password... and "Operation not permitted."

Huh. What am I doing wrong? It couldn't be that nobody thought to use notation in Metro since High Sierra came out, right? Right?

Have not tried with High Sierra yet... but I will.

I just tried it on an older version of High Sierra and notation seemed to work fine. I am now updating to the latest beta of High Sierra and will let you know.

Okay so I updated to 10.13.6 and I was able to repeat what you are seeing. I am definitely not happy with the way Apple continuously breaks stuff with each new release.

Anyway there is a very easy fix. Launch the FontBook program, right click on Aloisen New, and select 'enable Aloisen New family'. Relaunch Metro and you should be good to go.

Let me know how it goes.

It's not that simple for me; I'm using another font manager called FontExplorer, and activating the font there doesn't work. I've asked them about the problem because at least Apple has it working in FontBook.

And it gets me wondering: How go preparations for Mojave?

Or maybe it is that simple? I quit FontExplorer, opened Font Book, activated Aloisen New, quit Font Book, relaunched FontExplorer, and it's working as if nothing was wrong.

I absolutely loathe it when solutions are this counter-intuitive.
