How did you edit the .ins file - are there tools for that? Once I realized how long it was taking, I did a Google search for something like "instrument definition file editor", but didn't turn up anything useful (other than an attempt to reverse-engineer the .ins format for a GUI-less open source sequencer project at SourceForge). I've looked at the files in BBEdit, but 120 KB of ASCII file is more than I want to edit by hand.

If Cakewalk had been written within the last 3 years, this would be an ideal application of XML, making it possible for someone with minimal programming skills to whip up a decent editor in a night's worth of coding. Sadly, my skills are sub-minimal.

But then the 120Kb file would be 500Kb file or more. xml is the worst format you can imagine, and it's not because it's trendy that it is any better!

edit ins file

I just used Apples text editor. They are huge files and it seems like your selecting text forever. You just have to experiment and whack on it. There are commands in there that you need but taking out banks won't screw up the whole thing. I just worked on it until I had as little as I needed. It loads a lot faster in OS9 for me so if that is your situation thats where would edit it and load it to see how it looks.

Well, RealAudio can give it a run for its money; and, in the graphics world, any format that doesn't support Squant is clearly deficient.

Eewww. Think I'll see how slow it is in SE 6.0.4; now that Jeremy has pointed out how to save the definitions, it should just be a one-time thing, anyway.

editing ins files

Postby fastlanephil » Mon Feb 17, 2003 10:37 pm

I just thought i'd say that cutting out unneeded banks makes it a lot more convienent when selecting your instruments and well worth the time to do it . I now have 8 banks instead of 80 banks to minipulate. Just remember to always save an orginal file and of course your last one that funtions after cutting if your going to try cutting more out.
