-36 I/O Error fixed! - was caused by hard disk cable!!

This is not really a bug.......it's really metro telling you something is wrong................

I had Metro saved on startup as mono CD quality (44.1 and 16bit) as I was mucking around with some old time radio tracks.

When importing a stereo track 6.0.7.1 puts the stereo track into the designated mono track 1 and when you hit play a -36 I/O error appears. (I could be wrong about this only happening in 6.0.7.1 as I don't have the older versions to check it on.......it hasn't happened before though).

Anyone coming across this should make sure the digital audio settings in the setup menu are equal to any audio you're about to import.... well that was my solution.

Can different rates be played together??


Other errors on hitting play are in the metro faq and are as follows...

A series of errors upon pressing play, such as:

-50 Error in parameter list/not an existing volume/bad positioning/bad drive number
-225 Invalid sample rate
-229 invalid input device reference number.

I cannot get this to happen. Can you get this to happen consistently?

Different sample rates CAN be played together. It is however, not recommended as the sample rate and bit size converters takes up processing.

I can get it to happen everytime.

The one thing I didn't mention is the audio is a mp3 to start with, but it shouldn't make a difference should it?

The graphic editor shows track 1 with a single red line on the left indicating a mono track.

I use the import audio option to import the mp3, metro asks for a place to save it to and the options for saving are a stereo aiff which takes about 10 seconds to import.

Then it appears in the graphic editor in track 1 with a left and right (stereo) track indication.

Hitting play the -36 appears. Click OK and the warning dialog appears again. Click OK a second time and then it doesn't reappear.

I'm sure I had previously done this and when importing the audio would go to track 2 and play quite happily.

It's not a big deal........I just have to remember that its stereo not mono.

I believe I followed all your steps and I still cannot get it to happen. Can you link me to the MP3? Although I somehow doubt that is it. Perhaps it has to do with your audio. What audio device are you using?

Figured out what is to blame.

Was saving to another ATA 40GB drive.

That drive has decided to play up........it's giving I/O errors in Metro and Quicktime Player.

I may play with termination to see if I can get it to behave.......


Seems that when I installed the drive and put the new longer IDE cable inside the tower, its caused the problem.

Stacking the drives on top of each other and using the original cable that came with the mac has fixed it. Hopefully there's enough cooling. THey do make the cradle to fit another drive on top.

I wonder if they supplied me with the wrong cable (PC cable?) or the length of the cable had something to do with it. It was almost 2 foot long!

I guess it pays not to update too many things at once!
