Workflow enhancement suggestions and ideas

Postby Lytz1 » Thu Jul 10, 2014 7:58 am

Hello Jeremy,

after demoing Metro for a couple of days and buying it yesterday I want to take the opportunity
to offer some considerations to enhance the general speed of workflow in Metro,
which is in general a very elegant designed application:

The more important stuff:

a) Plug In GUI/Editor should open automatically after loading/instantiating.
This would make the most sense, because when I load a plug I want to edit it anyways,
so why the extra clicking?

b) After pressing cmd-9 for the Plug-In browser it would be very convenient to have the search field in focus
so that we can start to type in immediatly without clicking.
Especially useful if you have tons of plugs like me (I am sure you have..:)

c) The ability to save racks as presets. This would basically add the option to save complete Channelstrips.

d) Mute/solo selected tracks (multi-mute/multi-solo), solo-defeat

e) Vertical Volume Slider on the track page would be veeeeery useful as well.

f) Alphabetical Sorting of plugins when sorted by category. (The Structure really looks very chaotic the way it is now.)

The less important stuff:

a) Option to limit the number of the "Recent Plugins" List

b) Ability to save presets in the ctrl-cmd-H (Harmony) window would be kinda useful as well.

c) Additional drawing tool options for controller and automation data. (Like Sine, Sawtooth, Square, etc.)
(This would also overcome some of the limitations of missing automation control points that we can drag around.)

d) Besides Average Velocity "Relative Velocity" would be useful.
I.e. we have a velocity edited pattern and want to fade in/out the patterns velocity without changing the feel of the pattern.
(Or an option in the velocity menu for "relative scale")

In general: Relative scaling would be useful in a lot of other controller features of metro as well.
This would basically add some kind of "Trim-Automation" for controllers.

e) Auto scroll to selected track in mixer. (select a track in track view scrolls the track in view on the mixer)

f) Ability to see multiple aux sends in the mixer.
The mixer is so compact anyways, it can easily deal with some extra rows without cluttering the clean design.

g) Drum Editor /Assign New drum:
The ability of the "Assign new drum" window of reading the Note pressed on Keyboard (not the computer keyboard) for note entry.
(also direct note entry from external keyboard might find its uses also in other note entry windows
and would speed up the general workflow considerably.)

h) - Export selection as midi file

Nice additional keyboard shortcuts:

- Keyboard Shortcut to open current tracks VI Plugin. (and/or)
- Keyboard Shortcut to open current tracks upper most FX in chain. This would overcome the shortcomings in the mixer to open plugins.
- Keyboard Shortcut for zoom and snap levels in track overview. (maybe even zoom to selection?)

I hope you might find some of theese thoughts useful.

Best regards,

tL.

Thank you (again) for your thoughtful suggestions!

I will most likely implement these two suggestions.

Are you talking about the mixer setup here?

More info on how you in vision this working would be helpful.

You can already do this. The way the category sorting is performed is based on the current state of the plug-ins window. So items within categories will be sorted alphabetically, for example, if you have the plug-ins window sorted alphabetically.

Basically I always try to think simple.. :)

Just an ability to save the loaded plugins in the Effects/Synth Rack (See picture)
Maybe just an option in the right-click menu to save the state of the rack for that particular channel?

Again, I try to clarify my thoughprocess in pictures. :)

Select multiple tracks in the track overview (left half of the picture)
then hit (alt-s) solo to solo them all at one (right side of the pictue)
(or alt-m to mute them all at once)

Does that make sense? I think this would also be pretty helpful in terms of workspeed.

Solo-Defeat would be an option taken from old analogue desks. That means that the solo-defeated track would always play (not get muted) even if other tracks are solo'ed.
(Helpful for aux routings and other routings that require more than one channel)

Best,

tL.

I think it does make sense.
I believe your suggestion is already implemented if the tracks are grouped.
Currently, solo and mute work on non-selected tracks. I guess all selected tracks should be muted and soloed whenever mute or solo is selected (either via a click or via a key) except for the case of a click into a non-selected track. What do you think?

alt-s and alt-m on a mac... hmmm.... :D

Thats awesome, theese options are used so often that this will save a lot of clicking-time. (which is always a good thing.)

Hm. Doesnt work for me. unfortunately I cant make a screenshot, because the popup menu disappears, but basically I have the plugs sorted alphabetically in the (cmd-9) plugin window
and the plug pop-up window from the track view still doesnt sort the individual plugins inside the category folder. When I switch to "sort by manufacturer" sorting works like a charm.
Or do you mean another plugin window where I have to sort alphabetically to archieve that result?

But anyways, no dealbreaker.

Best,

tL.

Well I have already implemented those first two suggestions for the PC. Mac will happen later.

I noted that before I implemented it, when I type ctrl-9 and then start typing it would go to the plug-in anyway even though focus is not set to the search window and...
Sometimes it is nice to not open the edit window of a plug-in. For example, if I load Korg Wavestation, I can assign a preset directly in the graphic editor and enter some notes without having the edit window in the way. I may add an option to not open the edit window on instantiation. I do believe that in most instances the user would want to open the edit window.

As for the sorting. If you are sure that the (cmd-9) plug-ins window is sorting by plug-in name, write down the plug-ins under a certain category that are out of order and post them here.

Hey Jeremy,

Yes, thats exactly what I think. This would make the most sense and is very useful when working with multiple tracks (especially multiple audiotracks i.e. vocals) on the track edit window.
Also I think a trackgrouping function on the track editor page might be cool as well, to move blocks of selections around at once.
However, in terms of workspeed in the track overview window my guess is nothing comes close to "mute/solo selected tracks"

By the way:
Just gave the grouping in the mixer a test run and even when tracks are grouped (indicated by the red boxes below the mixer) mute and solo will work only for the track where I clicked on.
Volume is however is ganged/grouped. So maybe just a small design flaw? :)

Best,

tL.

Grouping mixer channels is different than grouping tracks. Right-click the selected tracks and select "operation->group tracks"

Bumping this thread because of this:

Solo-Defeat.

Basically, everything else here is neglectable or already in. But Solo-defeat for Aux Channels would be great.

Let's say you have some reverb and delay on the Aux and an instrument that sends to them.
Now you solo your instrument in a full mix. Right now the Aux Channels get muted as well and you hear your instrument dry.
Usually, you want to mix with effect-returns audible most of the time.

It would help immensely if the aux channels stay open (thus don't get muted when an instrument gets solo'd)

I think this (hopefully?) might be very easy to do. Maybe just an added checkbox option like "Auxchannel always solo when track is solo'd"
or "Auxchannels always audible" or something like that.

Makes sense?

Thanks,
tL.

(Might be redundant. I see that when a track gets solo'd on the arrangement page, Aux stays open... So a solo-defeat option for the aux-tracks
might not be necessary...)
