FR: Save and Increment

Postby abovethoughts » Tue Dec 24, 2013 1:45 pm

Hi - This is such a productivity and workflow booster. I picked up the habit using Adobe After Effects, Cantabile has this feature(which has been my main music program for the last 3 years). Plus, this is Reaper's weak point as they have Snapshots which is an interesting ideas but Snapshots are just not as simple as just a "Save and Increment".

Of all the items I have been considering FR requests this is my #1 request. Thanks for listening.

Attaching a screenshot of the pref (from Cantabile)

Notice I have it set to start the save dialog upon 1st incremental save, but after that it just appends a numerical sequence to each successive save.

From my Alpha CM KVR OSC challenge [ https://soundcloud.com/abovethoughts/ab ... t-thoughts ] is an example of my directory listing ...

That is sufficient. We should have something like this working by 7.2.1. :)

Next release will be 7.2

Okay I am sorry, I forgot about this. Can you give me a bit more information...

This is the way it would be easiest to implement, let me know if this is sufficient.

* add an enable switch to preferences

when enabled

* on save if the last saved file does not exist, brings up the save dialog
* if the file has been saved then search for a unique number, add that to the end of the file and use that as the name without bringing up any dialogs

Hello Jeremy,

Instead, how about an option in the preference panel with 2 tick boxes - 1 with the option to "Save the Current File" and the other with the option to "Make Incremental Saves" with time stamps instead e.g. 03112014-1000am. This is more professional and it makes life easier to go back to a specific file that was being worked on, on a specific day/date.

Thank you,
Adriano

Yes, the file creation and modification dates are already stored with the file on all operating systems. I want this to be as simple as possible to avoid introducing any new bugs.

This is the way I have implemented it for V7.2.3:

There is a switch in the switches menu 'Increment file name on save', when it is checked and 'save' is selected, all numeric values are removed from the end of the filename (before the extension) and then a new number is incremented and appended to the filename until the filename is unique.

I am not really sure why a user would want this function anyway as it will surely increase disk usage, in some cases, substantially.

This is implemented in the newly released 7.2.3. If you want the 'increment and save' switch to be retained, don't forget to save preferences.
