Instrument Plug-ins On Tracks With Metro 7

Postby fastlanephil » Wed Dec 26, 2012 9:13 pm

Hello Jeremy,

I've been sort of testing Metro 7 and was able to place a 16 instrument plug-in library instance such as Garritan Personal Orchestra on a track and load twelve or probably sixteen instruments into the Garritan player and create twelve MIDI tracks and render them to audio tracks and then add effects. I didn't have good luck trying this when working with Sections and then expanding them. I don't believe I could place a library such as GPO on a track and not a aux buss with Metro 6.5xx with out it creating problems.

Does this sound correct and would it then allow you to use more library instances from different libraries than previously possible as long as you work with one Section?

Hello Phil!

Are you reporting a bug in 6.5 or a bug in 7.0 or neither? In 7.0 you should certainly be able to place GPO on a Track or and Aux bus, or a mixer channel. The only caveat, is that when working with sections, an instance of GPO on a track will have its scope limited to that section. However, it should still work within a subsection and expanding subsections should work.

Well, theoretically I guess so. You should have been able to place 8 instances of GPO with 16 MIDI channel in each instance even in 6.5.x. Now each mixer channel can have an instance of GPO.

No, I wasn't reporting a bug. I'm just a little confused about how I would go about placing GPO on a mixer channel. But now at least I understand about using sections and placing GPO on a track.

I'm not sure exactly how one would go about placing GPO or other library on a mixer channel. In the Effect/Synths window I can select a track or an aux buss. If I try selecting a Built-In-Out that doesn't seem to work probably because it's an audio channel.

A step by step instruction of accomplishing this or other help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Phil

Hello Phil,

In the plug-ins window you should have 'plug-in is multi-timbral' checked for GPO so that when you instantiate it you get 16 new mixer channels.

At 1:13 of this video, a reverb is placed on a mixer channel. You can do it this way or you can select GPO directly in the mixer channel from the 'pgm' row (the position is also shown in the video at 1:36). Simply select GPO instead of the reverb. I should note that that there is a limitation in that you will only get a single stereo out on a mixer channel. I think you are better off creating N aux busses and using those instead. That would give you 8X16 = 128 channels. Is that not enough?

To better view the video, set it too full screen and 1080P

Yes,it looks like using the aux buss for libraries is still the best way for me. Sometimes I use five or six different libraries and each need an aux buss although I might only use a few instruments from some of them. So sometimes I do pretty much max out the aux busses with the addition of on or two effects which each need an aux buss. I would feel more comfortable with more than than eight. That would be a nice feature upgrade for me although I'm probably not the norm.

It might not be practical or very easy for you to up the number of aux busses.I could always put some libraries on tracks for the sections they're needed on. I think I have the processing power to do that.

Yes. I think upping the max number of aux busses should be implemented in the next release. As long as you don't need more than a stereo out though, Metro 7 will allow to use mixer channels instead.

I've been looking into adding support for more than 8 aux busses. It is doable but would require quite a bit more work than I expected. So before I commit to that (and not something else) I want to gauge whether this is something that customers are in dire need of. If anyone has an opinion please post here.

Well some good news on this forum topic.

While I have not implemented more aux buses yet. I have been able to implement initial support for playing from a soft-synth instantiated from a track in a different section. This has a major positive impact for using subsections because now any subsection track can access a synth instantiated in a different section with all the audio routing maintained. When this is fully implemented, a section could also be thought of as an instrument rack.

For Phil, this would allow you to setup your instruments in one section and use them in all subsequent sections and then string them together to make subsections.
