Metro 64-bit 'Movie menus grayed out?'

Postby stevethnz » Thu Jan 09, 2014 5:48 am

Hi,
I've just moved from my old Mac to a new Windows PC. 64-bit, 4-core, Windows 7, 16gb RAM.
I installed the 64-bit version of Metro, but was disappointed when I tried to import a movie and nothing happened!
So I came back to this Forum and all I read was 'The 32-bit version needs Quicktime installed, but the -64-bit version doesn't need Quicktime'. So I downloaded and installed the -32-bit version and I can import movies. Now, I would rather (1) Use all of the memory capabilities of my computer (2) the -64 version looks so nice (well done Jeremy). I use a lot of audio editing tools, Logic, Digital Performer, Reason. The main reason that I love Metro is for its Movie stuff. I'm a guitar teacher and can line up the bars of audio to fit the movie perfectly, which makes transcribing for students so much easier. It says when you install "some of the functionality that Quicktime provides may not be there in the -64 bit version' but I didn't expect it not to work at all. The Movie and Movie Text items are there, but they're in-operable. Can you explain this to me?
One other thing.... I was working away on a movie (in the 32-bit version) and transcribing into the Notation Editor. I created a repeat of 2 bars. I then went to delete a couple of superfluous bars (measures) that I had previously drawn in; selected them , pressed delete and Metro crashed. Unfortunately, I hadn't done a SAVE at that point (silly, I know), but now I'm going to have to start again (bother). None of this is meant to criticize. Rather the opposite is true. A wonderful piece of software by a visionary. Anyway, see if you can help by replying. Please!!! :(

Unfortunately, Quicktime for windows is 32 bit only. Metro requires Quicktime for alll of its movie functionality. I have thought about using Windows API's for supporting movies on the windows platform but that is a huge endeavor and I am not getting enough financial support to make that endeavor fruitful. Apple does not provide a 64 bit SDK. I would recommend contacting Apple and requesting they release a Quicktime 64 bit SDK for windows. As soon as they release a 64 bit SDK I will have movie functionality on the windows 64 bit platform (good luck).

As for the crash, I do not like to see crashes and do my best to get the bottom of them and fix them as soon as possible. If you have more info or can repeat the crash it would be greatly appreciated. Again, the problem is most likely with Apple, there are many weaknesses in the Apple Quicktime SDK. It can be sometimes be improved by using our recommended version of Quicktime for Windows.

Thanks Jeremy. I thought that it might be due to Apple's usual reticence towards developers (even though they say that they encourage development).
regards,
Steve :)
