Mixer channel filter

Postby auwerk » Tue Jan 15, 2013 2:41 am

I think we need simple filter for Mixer channels.
MIDI channels in Mixer window are a bit useless to me most of the time, but they occupy screen space. It will be very handy to toggle their visibility. This can be implemented as an item in 'Switches' menu, named 'Show MIDI channels in Mixer Window' and checked by default. Surely, it has to have a hotkey to toggle the option fast.
Another one thing: mixer window width is not adjusted automatically when a new channel is added. It would be nice if Mixer window will always display the whole mix. But that's just my preference.

What are mixer MIDI channels? Are soft-synth mixer channels, MIDI channels? Many soft-synths accept MIDI controller 7 for volume and 10 for pan.

Perhaps it would be better to have the option somewhere else, like a view popup in the mixer window. I need to tame the switches menu as it is already a bit out of control. I should probably move most of the more esoteric items into the preferences dialog.

I meant soft-synth channels, because I use external MIDI very rarely. But if you can filter just soft-synth channels, not all MIDI - may be this would be better. I don't know. It would be more comfortable to see just audio channels when mixing I think.

I think you are right. I just tried to put this new feature into the existing environment.
As for mixer popup menu - that's great. I think, if you will refine mixer window, you should add two common functionalities:
- Extensions for channel grouping (show/hide group, mute/solo group);
- Setting individual channel color (there are those little colored "LED"s for grouped channels - good, but it would be better if in addition we could paint channel's background in it's own color);
This will make easier to build a structure of a mix, to SEE what is what quickly.

This is implemented in 7.0.2. Here is a picture of the UI; right-click on any of the mixer channels to bring it up:

I decided to include all MIDI into a single category. When all channels are shown, "show all" is disabled. When any MIDI Channels are hidden the menu displays "Show MIDI", otherwise it displays "Hide MIDI". When any audio channels are hidden it displays "Show Audio" otherwise, as in the example above, the menu displays "Hide Audio". "Hide Selection", hides the currently selected mixer channels. Aux busses and the Master fader cannot be hidden and "Hide Selection" is unavailable when right-clicking on them.

I don't know if I will release 7.0.2 or roll it into 7.1. In either case it will be a free upgrade from version 7.
