Update:
This issue has to do with using multiple email addresses and has been resolved.
In order to upgrade, the store will search our user database for the email address entered when registering for the store. If it is not found the user will not be able to upgrade. In this case RIck's email addresses differed between the store and the user area (for downloads). Unfortunately there is no way for the user to change their email addresses in the user database. I will try to address this in the near future.
