Warning: Quicktime 7.4

Postby Jerm » Thu Jan 24, 2008 3:48 pm

Quicktime 7.4 will break Metro the 'save' functionality of all versons of Metro prior to 6.4.1.1 resulting in an error -54 message.

Do not install Quicktime 7.4 if you want to continue to use Metro, Metro LX or Metro SE before 6.4.1.1.

Metro 6.4.1.1 fixes this problem allowing save to work. However this problem is within Quicktime 7.4 and thus could introduce other problems.

Perhaps Quicktime 7.4.1 will fix these issues.

Edit: Indeed, Apple's release of Quicktime 7.4.1 fixes this issue!

Too Late For Me

Postby fastlanephil » Thu Jan 24, 2008 9:22 pm

So That's what's going on!

I was able to work around it with a metro file I had created previously to installing QT 7.4 but new files are now blanks.

Luckily I still have my old iMac G5 DAW setup to work with for now. :)

Another thing to note is that the file is actually saved (at least in my testing) but the file type is left as a quicktime movie when it is really a Metro document. It is possible to recover any saved files by changing their file type to 'BYSQ'.

If you have developer tools installed you can use the terminal program. Otherwise you need a utility program.

How to change a file's type and creator code using the terminal utility's command line?

Use the tool “/Developer/Tools/SetFile”. You need to install the Developers tools CD that came with OS X at least 10.1. Type “man SetFile” to see its doc but generally you can use this format

/Developer/Tools/SetFile -t BYSQ filename

where instead of filename simply drag the file to the terminal. Be very careful to only try this on a backup copy to be sure you know what you are doing.

Thanks for the information Jerm.

I found an old file editing utility called FileType that seems to work.

Once you have it converted to a Metro file you can SAVE changes but to save as you will have to make a copy of the file in the finder.

This seems to work for me.

FileType asks for a donation so if I have to use it long I'll send them a few if they are still active.

Here is an article that describes how to revert back to Quicktime 7.3.x. This is necessary for users who cannot upgrade to Metro 6.4.x for whatever reason.

Metro is not the only product affected by this Quicktime 7.4 bug.

Apple Fixes BUG!

Postby Jerm » Fri Feb 08, 2008 3:25 am

Good news! Apple has fixed the bug in QT 7.4 with the 7.4.1 update. This means that old version of Metro work properly with new versions of the OS as long as QT 7.4 is not involved.
