midi set up help

Postby way » Fri Jan 26, 2007 11:47 am

hi,

metro 6.3.8.3 on a mac g4 OS 10.3.9:

i have an m-audio usb axiom-25 with a roland xp-50 connected to it's midi in/out ports (port 2). when i record a track in metro using the axiom as the input device and have the xp-50 set as the output i'm only getting one channel sent to the board from metro. if i change midi channels in metro this isn't picked up by the xp-50. it seems as though i have only one midi channel to output to instead of the normal 16.

reason picks up the axiom as port 1 and 2 and i can control two diff modules in it from the keyboards, but metro is only sending data out on one channel to the xp-50.

i'm really new at this so any suggestions would be good.

also in the audio/midi app when i select "test" port two on the axiom stays red all the time. wonder why?

thx,

wm

Here are the possible culprits as I see it.

• The XP-50 is not in multi-timbral mode.
• In Metro you are not changing the output to properly select a new MIDI channel.
• The axiom is filtering channels.

Also, there is a great utility called 'MIDI monitor' that will show you all messages sent in your system and this may help.

still nothing

the xp-50 has a "performance" mode where one can set up the instruments and their midi channels. this is the multi-timbral mode. so it is in this mode.

you said:
"In Metro you are not changing the output to properly select a new MIDI channel."

in the tracks window i select the output for the axiom (which is just a midi controller), i get the options for axiom 1-16, i select a channel, "1" lets say. the output then passes through the controller to the xp-50 where it plays the sound on channel 1. if i then change the output in the tracks window to axiom channel 2, the sound on channel 1 on the xp-50 still sounds. i've tried to change the channel in the graphic editor and the mixer and with no change.

is there something i'm missing?

the only filter i can find about the axiom is the "usb to midi out" which controls where the data from the computer goes. when i set this to allow data to go to the midi out which is connected to the xp-50 then i get sound from the xp-50. still i'm not getting channel changes (the keyboard is set up to allow this) or multi channels from metro.

if i set up several midi tracks with diff output channels they still go to one channel on the xp-50.

this seems kinda basic so i'm at a lose.

The good news is that I have an Axiom 25 and when I connected to an external MIDI muti-timbral device I had no problem at all sending to channel 5. I did this without changing any settings on the Axiom.

The bad news is that I am not sure what is going on with your setup.

Good.

I think we can figure this out if we proceed methodically.

First in Audio/MIDI setup you should be able to click on test studio and then when you click on the Xp-50 (which by the way you should see and should be connected to the Axiom's input 1 and output 1, see picture) you should see notes being sent to multiple channels on the XP-50.

When that is working we can proceed to the next step.

In the tracks window select XP-50-2 in the Metro output popup. If it does not exist, select new output and create a Metro output (or outputs) for the XP-50.

Now any data on this track (the one assigned to XP-50-2) should send out on channel 2.

Hope that helps.

k, got that

Postby way » Fri Jan 26, 2007 6:31 pm

hi,

all right, i'm set up like your pic and created the track in metro. i get data to the xp-50 but, if i have the instrument on channel 2 in the keyboards screen it plays that instrument. if i change the output channel in the tracks to channel three nothing changes, the instrument assigned to channel two continues to sound. if i then change the keyboards screen to see which instrument is on channel three then that instrument plays, even though the channel from metro is still set to channel 2.

cool you have the axiom, that helps a lot.

thanks for hanging in there with me, i've been trying to figure out how to get this axiom working with reason and metro.

do your remote maps work well? the installer for the maps doesn't work in 10.3.9 (mac) m-audio says they are working on it. the installer was created in august for version 1.0.7 of the maps, so i don't hold out much hope for a fix. seems several people on the propellerheads forums are having the same issues.

grrr.

i'm off to dinner, and then i'll be back at trying to figure this out later. no real life it seems.

heh, sorry,

the keyboards lcd screen where it shows what the devices and settings are.

even though the xp-50 is in performance mode with data coming into channel two and i switch to part three of the performance set on the keyboard, which is set to play on channel 3 then that is the instrument that begins to play, even though the data from metro is still coming in on channel two.

this is starting to sound like a problem with the keyboard huh? it should just keep playing the instrument on channel two. it's like it's playing in patch mode instead of performance.

hey,

i got it working, must have been some buried setting deep in the xp that wasn't allowing the change. i reset the keyboard to default settings and it worked.

course lost all of my user sets, oh well... such is life.

thanks for the updates.
