Can't record audio

Using Metro 5 PPC (Cakewalk), which I assume is the full version, not SE. I got it with an M-Audio 2496 Audiophile card. I get an audio signal when testing the mic, but when I hit Record there is no signal and nothing is recorded. What's up with that? Mac OS 9.2, G4/533, 1GB RAM.

I am pretty sure that that is the SE version. Try registering, logging in and downloading the 5.02 update.

I bought the same card and received the same version of Metro. I don't believe it is an SE version. I can hear the output but, cakewalk is not recognizing any input signal. I have 9.2 OS on a G3 with 384 RAM. If I can't figure this out soon I am going to try out some other software options... This is too confusing.

There is not a lot of detail in these posts and since there isn't I need to ask the following questions:

Is the recording track you're recording into, have the red 'R' selected ready to record?

Is there a piano roll down the side of the track you're recording into? If so that's a midi track not an audio track. Go to the PORT selection and change it to an audio track. If the mac can see the audio card then you can add instruments for it from the special menu - modify instruments and busses. Where the "off" popup is, you should be able to get your audio card to show there, type in 4 for the number on the left and click the check box.

Do you have OMS installed under OS9?

Can you import an audio track and hear it in metro?

That is what I was wondering... but the manual doesn't really explain ports very much. Yes, the piano is showing up although the red record button is ready to go. OMS is installed under OS9.2. But, I think the Metro is set up to record MIDI as you described. My card shows up in Metro and I set it up under the ASIO audio selection menu. I just didn't know if a port had to be set up also. The manual presented ports as an option rather than a necessity to record. I didn't want to waste my time further unless I knew as a fact it was a necessity... thanks! I will let you know the outcome when I have time to work on it again.

I just checked the packaging... it is the SE version. Funny how they give no sign of this anywhere except the packaging. What are the limits of the SE version?

We probably received the same disk... Maximum Audio Tools with Unity Piano as part of the collection. It is a bummer they put a registration code on the envelope for Unity Piano but, failed to put one for Metro SE. I read in the Metro read me file that as long as you are using the original disk, it will install okay which, is fine. I wish they would have made the registration number a little more known though.

I am very displeased with the manual for Metro... It has not explained nearly enough about this program. I followed all the directions that it gives to record audio from a sound card that seems to be passing a signal just fine. When they shipped these two items together they really should have pre-selected any configurations that were not fully explained in the documentation. Otherwise, there is no way of knowing.

I am going down to Guitar Center right now to see what options are available to burn BR-8 recordings to CD in a much less confusing way. Depending on the price, packaging and technical support on Metro SE 6, I will consider the purchase.

Right now though, I am very displeased with the way Cakewalk has released version 5 to those who purchased sound cards that are supposedly supported.

Track count and aux busses would be your main clue.

A little funny that Cakewalk is giving away Metro 5 SE (and I assume this happened recently) since Metro 5 came out years ago and they haven't supported it or replied to any emails I ever sent them. I'm talking perhaps 3-4 years ago! Because of this I wouldn't expect any manual that came with it to be complete.

I think you should download Metro 6 SE and see how different it is. The demo runs for 25 minutes before quitting.

Under 9.2 Metro 6 won't require OMS. It will open with a midi track selected and Quicktime Instruments as the instruments (internal port).
If you see Port:Internal, click and hold down and select edit port. Choose audio or built in audio controller and that track is then set to record audio from the Mac's mic in.
If you go straight to the special menu and modify instruments and busses you can add your audio card so it becomes a port option. Then when selected as a port, the track automatically becomes an audio track and you can take it from there. Now jerred you shouldn't have to read the manual. I'm sorry I know nothing about the ASIO setups but I think you have that sorted anyway.

Everything that is new and unfamilar may be a little confusing at first. If you take the time to work it out you may have a laugh about how easy it was.

I received Metro 5 SE for free over a year ago as it came with the soundcard I purchased. It doesn't mention anything about expiring at some point but, I guess I really can't complain since it was a free version at the time. Perhaps I will purchase Metro after trying a trial version to make sure it works first. I noticed they don't sell Metro 6 in the Apple Store or Guitar Center.

I just purchased Deck 3.5 LE today, installed the ASIO driver that was recommended for the software and WHALLA! It picked up the signal from my soundcard immediately! I use hardware to lay down tracks... my only goal has been getting the tracks onto a CD as the equipment I have does not have a burner built into it.

I can upgrade my cabling to optical transfer to a CD burner eventually but, RCA will do fine for now.

I originally was a Deck user and was always troubled by the 'Connect to Metro' option wanting to know what it was and why. When I found out Metro was like a cousin and did midi as well I purchased metro to run alongside it.

Then I thought........why have 2 programs to do the same thing and Deck got dumped.
