Is there a piano roll down the side of the track you're recording into? If so that's a midi track not an audio track. Go to the PORT selection and change it to an audio track. If the mac can see the audio card then you can add instruments for it from the special menu - modify instruments and busses. Where the "off" popup is, you should be able to get your audio card to show there, type in 4 for the number on the left and click the check box.
Do you have OMS installed under OS9?
Can you import an audio track and hear it in metro?
