Open Directory Users and Metro

Postby AUtech » Wed Sep 20, 2006 3:22 pm

I am trying to install Metro 6 onto a lab of 7 Intel Macs which are bound to our LDAP server using Open Directory. We have licences for the 7 machines and all of the local users work just fine, but when the Open directory Users log in it asks for the Serial and Comfirmation numbers and wants to re-register the program. How do I get this to stop?

I am not familiar with "LDAP server using Open Directory" so I do not know what an Open Directory user is. We do support the Sassafras server and this should work on intel macs as well as PPC macs. Have you looked into getting a Sassafras key server?

LDAP, Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, is an Internet protocol that email and other programs use to look up information from a server, in this case we use LDAP for user authentication to our Directory. Basically multiple users and home folders are stored in the directory server and any of these users can login to any computer and still access their home holders. The LDAP function is simply how the users authenticate. The problem we have is, whenever a directory user logs in to a workstation with Metro installed, even though the software is installed and registered on the local machine, it still prompts the user for registration and qualification information. I need to find a way to let the directory users use the local resouces with out having to register each user.

I am not sure I fully understand but without us adding something on our end it probably will not work since Metro's protection is based on tying its preferences file to the specific hard drive it was launched from.

Is there a Preference file that I can to copy to the server or the individual home directories on the server? Basically everyone lives on the server and when they log in to a workstation, it sends a command to the server to load their individual home folders instead of the local home folders on the workstation. The twist is that while the home folder lives on the server and loads onto the local machine, the user still has access to all the local resouces including all applications. If you want some more info as to how this works, or if I just stink at expaining it check out his address http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/features/opendirectory.html.
Thanks

Yes I had read the info on that link. I think your post provides more pertinent information that the link does.

You might be able to do it by creating an alias to Metro Preferences in a fixed location on the mac client although this may require a Metro update so that we follow the alias which we probably do not do now. If you want to pursue this avenue please send a private email.
