Metro will do it but you will manually have to do the conversion from MIDI to audio. Once you have all the audio files you can use the jukebox to do a batch convert to MP3 if you have downloaded and installed the required LAME framework and LAME quicktime component.

Instructions for installing those can be found on this forum.

Yes it looks like the MP3 converter was pulled from the developers site. Your best bet, for now, would be to contact someone on this list that has the converter and see if you can obtain it directly from them.

Try Audio Hijack

Postby Stephanie » Thu Aug 24, 2006 4:29 pm

Hi François:

Find a VERY old version of iTunes (6.0 or so); it will render MIDIs. Newer ones won't.

Failing that...

I use Audio Hijack (shareware, http://www.rogueamoeba.com) for recording audio from just about any application or external audio source. QMIDI is a shareware MIDI player ( http://www.geocities.com/mixage/ ) with playlist capability. So this should work:

Launch QMidi and pop your files into a playlist. Pay the shareware to get rid of the nags ($12).

Launch Audio Hijack, pay the shareware (or you get noise after 10 minutes). Configure it to hijack (listen to) QMidi's output. There are options to start a new file after n seconds of silence (ideally between songs). Set it to record to MP3. Hit Record. The recordings go into ~/Music/Audio Hijack and have ugly timestamped names. Sigh.

In QMidi, press Play.

Check after a couple of songs to see that all is well (levels, file splitting etc.). Then turn down your speakers, fill up the playlist and let 'er rip, so to speak.

I use a variant of this to capture digital audio from my Kurzweil keyboard for burning to CDs.

No, I don't work for Audio Hijack or the QMidi folks, but they sure work for me.

midi's

Postby françois » Thu Aug 24, 2006 4:36 pm

thanks a lot stephanie, I will continue to search an old iTunes version ( maybe next week I will convert ). I work also with Audio Hi jack pro, but the song's name aren't converted.
amadeus is very very good for that, you enter the midi file and it can auto convert it ( without running the song ) to mp3.

To convert MIDI to MP3 defers depending on what you are trying to do.

I am assuming that you can already convert from Audio to MP3 using the link provided earlier in this thread.

To convert MIDI to Audio there are a couple of ways to do it. The best would be to record the Audio output of your MIDI device by connecting it to the input of your audio device.

If you do no mind the low quality of Quicktime Musical Instruments and your MIDI file is GM, you can simply import an audio file and select a MIDI file. The imported audio file will be based on Quicktime Musical Instruments.

By the way this is covered here in our "Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)" on our support page which should be consulted first if you have questions.

Think GarageBand would convert with a quite good quality output (ie - using the GB samples and sounds) and you can mess around quite a bit with instruments and volume settings etc. Would work best if the midi files are GM. Going to take a while to do 500 though!
You could use QT (pro) which will use the in built QT instrument software (no control over volumes and instrument settings). As with GarageBand, output to aiff, import into iTunes and convert to mp3 there.
