Opening in Rosetta

Postby Scoot » Sat Jul 01, 2006 8:06 pm

Does 6.3.5.5 and 6.3.5.6 open in Rosetta?

If I tick the box in the 'get info' to do so and launch, I do not see old PowerPC plugins. Activity Monitor says it is Intel (maybe it always says that anyway).

If I use the 6.3.3 version (still downloadable) I see the old plugs.

I don't know. I would suggest if you want to use old plugs perhaps use 6.3.3. There are utilities you can use to strip one of the binaries from the UB. This would leave you with the PPC version which would be forced to run under Rosetta.

i'm not sure if this only applies to one version or another (se,lx,or full), but i think i read something here that went something like this:
the executable has both versions contained within it...it automatically runs the correct version (ppc or intel) depending on your hardware.
that appears to be working...

also, insofar as apps, i think monolingual can strip out anything from g3 all the way to intel parts of programs, but i think it's an all or nothing deal (i.e. it does the whole hard drive, you can't just target it at one program). be careful with the language removal stuff too...you can trash things pretty well with that.

Um.....yeah that is true BUT I am wanting to run in PowerPC mode on a Macbook so I can run 'old' plugins. Selecting the 'open in rosetta' option does not let you use or even see your powerpc VSTi's.

Therefore I run 6.3 to get it to work.

Either strip the intel out some way or use 6.3

Hi All,

On a MacIntel, you can always run the latest UB version of Metro alongside a stand-alone PPC plugin host, like UglyVSTi.

UglyVSTi opens with Rosetta and will load PPC VSTi plugins. Using an IAC bus, you can route midi from Metro into UglyVSTi and the old plugins will sound - with very little latency, I might add. Forget about routing the audio back into Metro via Rewire (which UglyVSTi usually supports), as Rewire is not currently able to jump between Rosetta and native Intel apps.

To get the synth's audio back into Metro, you'll need to record UglyVSTi's output using a patch cable (output to linein). Just be sure to disable Metro's Software Audio Thru feature, or mute the record enabled track (to avoid a feedback loop).

UglyVSTi is a MAX/MSP application and there are a few critical settings to be aware of when running it in Rosetta. In the "output options" dialog, be sure that "Overdrive Mode" is ON and "Scheduler in Audio Interrupt" is ON. I have had success setting the 'The I/O Vector Size" to 256. If you hear glitches, you can increase this setting.

This option doesn't solve all PPC plugin issues, but it does allow you to use "some" of your old VSTi plugs when running the more recent versions of Metro. A final warning - test individual VSTi plugins at low volume before using them . . . if they don't work, you can get a rather loud noise. Good luck.
