actually, insofar as the audio side, that'd be my most frequent use as well...1 midi channel (say, for drums) going to a multi-output vi drum module. i'd want, say 16 separate pannable mono audio outputs (bouncing every time i tweak isn't really the ideal in this case).
it's great for roughing parts when you're not sure what's gonna change. the aux method works, but i hate hearing kick in the left, snare right, tom 1 left, 2 right, etc...

i'm asking if there's any way to assign each vi output as a separate pannable mono channel, rather than as a half of a stereo aux prior to bouncing.
for instance, i often will use multitimbral vi's...but in order to tweak stuff like velocities, i tend to like to hear the part in the context of the mix, placed where it will be in the stereo field amongst the other instruments.
i've gotten multitimbrals to work with metro, but the first instrument out is aux1 left, the second out aux 1 right, and so on.
am i missing something?

Aux busses are stereo. What VI (I assume you mean soft synth or virtual instrument here) exactly are you using? Most multi-timbral synths that have multi-outs, such as IK's Sampletank 2 or Korg's M1, have a way to select stereo outputs from within the plug-in's interface. The VI's pan knob then will select the correct stereo panning to the selected aux buss.

If not, there may be a utility plug-in that takes a mono in and outputs a stereo signal. This (or in fact any mono plug-in, such as a delay) when placed after the VI can be used to create a stereo signal and then the Aux return pan knob can be used for panning that individual output.

drumkit from hell superior presents several mono outputs and a couple stereo outs as well (mono for each drum, stereo for overhead/ambient mics). it'd be cool if you could have the mono outputs from dfhs selectable as inputs to mono audio tracks.
with the aux bus method, again, the kick shows up as aux1 Left, snare on aux 1 Right, and so on.
i figure i'm just missing something simple...

Yes that would be cool. I had been thinking about having track inserts support output to multiple mixer channels but it was placed on the back burner a while back probably because it requires a substantial amount of development. Perhaps posting a feature request in this forum could increase its implementation priority.
