What is: "Error -2048 No Movie Found"

Postby Industro » Thu Feb 23, 2006 10:47 pm

On several recent occasions, when I have burned a Bundle file on a CD, transfered a Bundle from one computer to another, or when I have FTP'd a Bundle file, I get an error "-2048 No Movie Found" when trying to open it.

What causes this and how can I avoid/fix it???

Sounds like a bug. Do you have a smallish bundle file that does it consistently?

Currently, the bundle that I have (that is exhibiting the problem) is 148 MB. It is a Compacted Bundle file. I can't even open it. The error prevents any audio from loading.

It acts like it is "corrupt" but it saved/plays fine as a Metro Document.

I will re-attempt to Save As Bundle with a smaller "excerpt" of the same song project and if the problem persists, I'll let you know.

Thanks.

Does it have a blueish BNDL icon?

It doesn't happen when just compacting and re opening on the same computer?

Would it happen if the file was .sitx and then transferred and re opened?

Would it happen if it was not a 'compacted' bundle?

Burned a bundle as a Mac disk?

Both Macs have the same Metro version?

Yes, bluish "BNDL icon."

Here's what I know...

I experience no problems saving a Metro Bundle and then opening it back up on the same Mac.

But...

Saved a Metro Bundle File, burned it on a CD, copied it to another Mac with the same version of Metro, tried to open it... "No Video Found." Would not open.

Also,

Saved Metro Bundle, FTP'd it to another Mac (w/ same Metro version), tired to open it, "No Video Found."

Also,

Saved Metro Bundle, transfered it to a PC (via LAN). Burned to CD, copied back to the SAME Mac (from the CD), tried to open... "No Video Found."

I think each of these instances occurred with a "Compacted Bundle," but I'm not 100% certain.

However,

When I save the Metro Bundle and STUFF it into a .sitx archive, and THEN transfer, burn, or FTP to another Mac, it opens FINE!!!

It seems that the Bundle File itself is very "susceptible to corruption" when transferred, unless it is protected in a .sitx file. How can this be???

Feel free to try and reproduce my experiments. In the mean time, I will try to put together a "smallish" Metro Project (and Bundle) that exhibits this problem for you to troubleshoot (Not sure if I will be able to get it small enough to e-mail, though.)

So, any ideas why this happens??? How could an Bundle File be more vulnerable to data loss than any other file?

Thanks!

I will do more research but it sounds from the information that you provide that this is related to the resource fork of the BNDL file which, of course, is removed in the situations where the file is transferred before being stuffed.

Well it is definitely not the resource fork since there is no resource fork for bundle files. Can you point me to a URL of .bndl file online that fails? I would be very interesting in getting to the bottom of this.

Can Metro open files that end in .ac3 ?

Seems to be an audio format that opens in the video lan player VLC.

Metro in the dock highlights as if you can drop them into Metro.

When you do you get the same -2048 No Movie Found.

(Metro 6.3.3 and QT 6.5.3)

OK, how should I provide the bundle???

Would you like me to provide two (2) files... one that is stuffed (.sitx) and one that isn't (.bndl) so you can compare the differences?

Remember, the Bundle File that was transferred without being stuffed first does not open (so you won't be able to open it to troubleshoot the original project file).

Let me know how you'd like it and I'll get something online for you to download.

Thanks!

I think initially just publish the .bndl file on a server somewhere. If that does not help then publish the .sit file.

Jerm,

I went ahead and uploaded BOTH a "stuffed" (.sitx) version of a small compacted Bundle file, AND an identical ".BNDL" file (without being stuffed).

Both versions opened up fine on my Mac BEFORE I uploaded them. However, I just downloaded them both off the server and the results confirm that the unstuffed .BNDL file DOES NOT open (No Movie Found), but the stuffed version (once decompressed) opens fine. Note that both .BNDL files were "identical" when they were initially created.

You can DOWNLOAD THEM BOTH HERE.

Please keep us posted on your findings! This is a very strange bug.

Thanks!

Okay the bundle file is fine. The file type is not being set properly when going across PC land. This will be addressed in the next pre-release but you can use a program like resedit to set the file type of test.bndl to 'Mbun'. Then it opens fine.

PC land is a dark and dirty place.

Thanks for looking into this Jerm!
