Metro Universal Binary for both PowerPC & Intel Macs?

Well, the new Core Duo Intel-powered iMacs and "MacBook Pro" notebooks are released and they are very impressive.

The MacBook Pro is a welcomed upgrade since the Powerbooks have been stuck in the "G4" black hole for years.

I'll probably be an early adopter of the MacBook, so I am wondering:

Is there an ETA yet on when Metro will be released as a "Universal Binary" so that it can run natively on both Power PC and Apple Intel architecture?

I doubt Apple's "Rosetta" translation software will adequately accommodate the PowerPC version of Metro (especially if the project is complex) because Rosetta doesn't support apps (well) with Real-time playback...

Just wondering if there's an estimated "Universal Binary" release date, as I'll probably hold out for Metro (Universal) before upgrading my Mac. ;)

Yes Dan! That does sound like the correct priorities.

We have already started the transition but we will not be releasing the native intel version of Metro until months (hopefully not more than 3) after the first intel Mac computers are released and are readily available. I think the ship date is March of this year but that is not to say that they will be readily available by then.

Afterall OSX is about 5 years old now.

Hey Industro, let me know how it goes! :shock:

All kidding aside, I think it will be a while before you can replace your current DAW environment on an Intel Mac. If history repeats itself, the hardware may need a revision or two to "settle down," if you will. Also, if plugins are critical to your work, you'll have to wait for them to port and have the kinks ironed out. As was the case when we moved from OS9 to X, some plugins we like may not make the trip. I'll bet it won't take Jeremy long to produce a stable version of Metro on the new platform, but the other areas may take a bit longer. Now I'll take a sip of coffee from my half-empty cup . . .

I don't know if it is proper etiquette to quote yourself but actually I was wrong. The iMacs are shipping now. We expect to get an iMac soon to get Metro working on the intel Macs.

Yes, I plan to run my existing PowerBook along side my new Intel Macbook Pro until the other developers catch up and I'm able to complete the transition to the point when my workflow has fully adapted to the new system.

Yes, I may wait until the next hardware revision (after the initial release) to upgrade. I anticipate they'll come out with a "17-inch" MacBook Pro or something in the upcoming weeks.

It's such a big portable maybe the 17" will just die out?

Think the ibooks (mac book without pro name perhaps) will be 13" widescreens.


Am wondering if old plugins will work.
Yes the apps have to be core duo aware to run on what is dual CPUs but surely the plugin is more of a case of able compatible with VST / AU afterall it's still 10.4.4 or whatever.

Time will tell.

I decided to hold off on the new Intel MacBook until more applications are released as Universal Binaries. The latest benchmarks show that "pro" PowerPC apps just "crawl" under Rosetta, so I can't afford a reduction in productivity with my current software workflow, until more developers (like Adobe/Macromedia) release Universal apps.

Glad to see Sagan Tech is supporting Universal. I'll be embracing the new platform very shortly.

Just out of curiosity: Was it a lot of trouble to recompile for Universal Binary? I'm facing doing that with M1000X soon...

It is easy to recompile. However there is quite a bit of work involved if you have any files that you want to be compatible because any fields of your database of size greater than one byte will need to be endian swapped.
