Weird Crash

I was using GPO and just doing some velocity editing when my iMac G5's screen went dim and locked up. There was a large Apple dialog box in about five languages that said I must restart. Iv'e never seen anything like this before. I suspect it has something to do with the GPO Kontakt player but I thought I would report it to you. I did the Apple report.

I had that before with a program. After an upgrade it went away. In my case it was a modern file format making the older version of the product hiccup........making software and hardware collide.

It could be a general bug or it could be a trap specific to your Mac type.

You need to be more specific as to what you were doing in the velocity editing.........maybe it's a bug that could be fixed before the next update or it could be a GPO problem that must be taken up with them.

The only time I have that problem is when running Metro, I get tired, put computer to sleep, turn off MOTU 828, come back later, wake up computer without turning on the MOTU. I guess it's not a good idea to change things in midstreem...

The technical name for this is a "kernel panic" and it is supposed to be impossible for an application (like Metro) to cause this. In other words it is a error caused by the OS with which the OS cannot recover, or a driver, such as an audio device driver. It might also be caused by a hardware problem, such as bad memory.

Which audio device are you using?

I really wasn't doing anything at the percise moment it paniced. I'm using a Tascam US-122 but I was ony using it's headphone port at the time. I have a Radium 61 hooked up with USB and a Midiman USB 2x2 going to my Clavinova. I'll first make a HD clone and then reinstall all drivers and do a hardware check. I haven't noticed any problems since. I have an 1.8 iMac G5 which I can diagnose with LEDs also if necessary.

The M-Audio drivers did need updating and no hardware problems detected.

Have you recently updated your OS? I have experienced kernal panics after updating OSX, even after doing an archive and install. If so, you could try repairing permissions, repairing the startup volume, then running the update again. Also, I have heard that corrupted fonts can cause kernal panics, so you could try removing some to see if things improve. Jerm, is there anything to the font corruption thing?

There is discussion about the font cache and this can become corrupted.


There was also talk of a character in filenames (probably not an issue if you save and create your own filenames) that can send Tiger into a spin.

Thanks Scoot. Yeah, a corrupted Font cache can definately cause problems. The issue I'm referring to has to do with the OS loading a corrupted font. I vaguely remember a thread on some forum where a kernel panic was alegedly resolved by isolating and removing the bad font.

My kernel panic problems started when I updated to Tiger. After several attempts, my problems were resolved by a new install on a clean partition (I hate it when people suggest that, but that's what ultimately worked for me). Good luck fastlanephil . . . I hope you can stable things up without resorting to such extreme measures.
