Region names

Postby Casper » Mon Nov 21, 2005 5:19 pm

So now I'm sure it's not already there (from the answer in the audio forum), here is my feature request: It would be nice to be able to give some sort of name to a Region. I'm currently working on a theatreshow for which I need to do quite some editing in a soundrecording, with lots of spoken word. I've chopped up the text in small bits, so I can put them in a different order. But now I have so many bits of audio (regions), that I have difficulties finding the right ones. So it would be nice to have a name 'in' a Region in the Graphic editor or, maybe just a number and an separate window with a 'list of regions'.

Is either naming the audio file the region references and showing that or having the ability to colorize each individual region good enough?

I think we will implement naming the region and colorizing as it is not really that hard. We will be limited to about 20 characters or so per region though.

I'm not quite sure I understand your answer for 100%. I think what you mean is, giving the region the same name as the track where it came from, ands then give it a colour. It would be nice however to be able to give it an even more explanatory name. In my case, some words from the text that's in the specific region. Ofcourse a colour would be nice too. The character limit is no problem for me. If I want to write a letter, I would use a wordprocessor. It is just for easy recognition of the region.
Thanks for considering this request.

Well it turns out to be easy to implement the naming of regions and that is complete. However adding color to each individual region is more complicated that I had anticipated and therefore will probably not make it into the next prerelease.

As for the names, currently they appear only in the graphic editor and once you enter a name there is no way to get the name to disappear without either turning off the 'show audio regions' option or deleting the name via the region edit dialog. Were you wanting the names to appear in the tracks window as well?

Now you're mentioning it. That would be welcome too, to see it in the tracks window as well. But it is already fine for me to see it in the graphic editor. As I mostly have the tracks in the track window in a small view, so it would be difficult to read. On the other hand, I can imagine that I will use the tracks window more often when I can see and do more there. The colour thing is not a real issue for me because I have to read the text very carefully to identify the right region. In music making however it would be nice to give simular regions (e.g. variations of a riff) the same colour. Thanks again and great that 'Region naming' is coming to the next prerelease. I can't hardly wait.

Not that I use the tracks window for graphic visuals (as I do that in the graphic editor) it is a great window for someone coming in from a Pro Tools environment. Having everything to the left of the track is very familar to such a 'switcher'.

It is becoming apparent the tracks window is more powerful than I thought. :)

The saddest thing about Metro is not many users know there is so much in it.

It's almost getting to the point where a window screenshot is required, with all the hidden popups exposed (as in the tracks window), everything labelled A, B, C, D and then Option click of A, Command click of A, Ctrl click of A.... and a description of what each one does.
I can't keep up with all the new features.
