Philharmonik Miroslav Major Problem With Metro

Postby fastlanephil » Tue Aug 30, 2005 12:28 am

I'm using Metro G4 6.3.2.2. When I load Philharmonik Miroslav(AU) on an aux buss I only get one output for it(Phiharmonic-1). If I try to load the VST version I get an erreor that says " ERROR: Too many outputs. Plug-in cannot be loaded."

Is this an IK Multimedia product?

How many outputs is it supposed to support? Metro only allows up to 20 outputs.

I think if you load the plug-in as an AU and then go to preferences there is a way to set the number of outputs. Set it to 8.

Actually I might be misunderstanding.

One thing you need to do so that this plug-in loads as a multitimbral plug is to right click (or control-click) on it in the plug-ins window and tell Metro it is multi-timbral. After you do this once it will always load as a multi-timbral instrument and you will get 16 channels (and mixer faders) automatically.

That took care of the problem fo the AU plug-in. I was hoping it was just a setting problem. The VST still gives me that error message but the AU will do the job.

Yes, it's a IK Multimedia product. The next upgrade for Sampletank2 will allow the samples to be imported from Philharmonic. They are now using a USB dongle instead of installs. The dongle can be anywhere on the USB chain.

Thanks for the help.

That is too bad.

The VST error - would that mean it's not completely VST compliant or it is jumping over metro's 20 outputs?

Would multiple instances of the plugin allow to take it to the maximum outputs? Say 32 or 64? (Obviously only in the AU version for now).

>dongle

Instead of dongles, they should do demos that expire........instead of making 'FREE' versions of their software!

just an opinion.

Over Metro's 20 outputs.

I don't think he is looking for multiple physical outputs anyway. He just wanted a way to have all 16 MIDI channels as separate Metro Outputs.

If I am understanding this properly, it seems that you need to place multitimbral synths on an aux channel in order to route all parts to an audio output (so you can apply different effects to each part). Since each additional audio output is actually another aux channel, I can see how quickly the eight aux channels can get used up.

I am wondering if Philharmonik can work like Sampletank can?

What you can do is place Sampletank onto one midi track (not AUX).
Allocate 16 outputs to sampletank in the modify outputs and busses.

As you select the instruments inside sampletank to go in the 1-16 channels (inside the sampletank window) you ensure you match it in the tracks window outputs.
So say channel 5 in the sampletank window is bass, selecting sampletank-5 in the tracks window will ensure bass is heard.
Every sound/instrument used has individual effecet settings from within the sampletank range of effects - vol, pan, reverb etc.

All AUX's remain free.

I think the confusion here, and I am also guilty of it, is between MIDI channels and Audio outputs. A multitimbral synth can be placed on a track as a track insert and can have 16 different tracks assigned to different channels but is limited to only a single audio output. In this case only the first MIDI channel will be created automatically and the user would need to create more MIDI channels in order to accomplish this.

Whereas if that synth were placed on an aux buss (and the synth was marked as multitimbral) then Metro will automatically create 16 MIDI channels for you.

As for the audio outputs, these need to be handled by the user in the effects window but that was not what Phil was originally having a problem with.

I suppose you could build your mix and then at the end quicking solo each one and record it to individual audio tracks if required.........thou at that point, it probably isn't necessary.

Yes, I guess I jumped in and tried to switch the topic to "audio" outputs (sorry, Phil). But as I was following this thread, I realized that I had not yet tried to make a multitimbral synth output to separate audio outputs (by placing it in an aux). Well, it doesn't take much incentive for me to fire up Metro and start banging away! :D

In doing so, I realized that if I wanted unique audio outputs for each timbre (so I could apply different effects to each), I would need to assign as many auxes. Is my assumption correct? Is there a better way to apply effects to the individual timbres without using up the auxes? I'm using Vsamp - no internal effects other than a low pass filter.

Scoot, you're absolutely right. You always have the option to render to an audio track and send it over to an aux effect (or render the effect, for that matter). And sometimes it's better to keep things simple.

I guess if you had the horsepower, you could just leave heaps of effects all over the place and keep it complex so only you can understand the setup.......but 6 months later would you think someone else designed it?

I mentioned that IK Multimedia is now using USB dongles for CP. The USB dongle has some advantages to downloading installs but if the dongle is lost or stolen you have to repurchase the product. For your home or studio I was thinking that keeping them in some sort of ventilated USB hub box that is bolted to a desk would be a good security measure. You could even use bolts with holes and run a custom made cable lock through them. Right now i'm hiding mine when i'm not using it because i'm in a somewhat unsecured enviroment(roaming teenagers). The dongle does have a large hole at the end so you can secure it to your laptop for mobile use.
