Scoot,
I believe you are hearing your Mac's noisy built-in audio and other assorted interference from the computer. Jeremy, please correct me if I'm wrong - when you record enable a bunch of audio tracks with the same source (and software audio thru enabled), there is an additive affect regarding the noise at the source. If you were to actually multi-record, the resulting individual files would also have the noise from the source. Playing all of them together would again cause that additive affect. Disabling software audio thru only prevents you from monitoring it live while recording (or simply with the tracks record-enabled). Also, because you were listening to silence (or almost silence), I'll bet you had the volume jacked up pretty high - which also raises the noise floor.
I tried this in Digital Performer and got the same kind of noise (except that I could only record enable TWO mono tracks . . . I love Metro!). Anyway, I guess there's good reason why some invest in an audio interface (I have my eye on the Motu Traveler).
Mike
