Using a VSTi on numerous parts using AUX

Is it possible to assign a VSTi on an AUX track so it's available on all parts without having to load numerous instances of it, ie one for every part? Might be obvious, but I just don't know how to do it...!

Yes. Definitely. That is the recommended way. Try downloading the Quick Aux Setup Tutorial.

The PDF was written by me, when the mixer window was called the instruments window.

The trick to using the AUX is after sticking the effect on the AUX how to hear it working.

This is hopefully explained clearly in the last couple of sentences of the PDF.

If you are happy placing an effect on a track and it works fine, use that same effect on the aux so you know what the desired result should sound like. (delete it from the track or start afresh so you know you're hearing the aux effect rather than the track effect).
It is a really useful way to use plugins.

For a reason or another, I did not realize that I could work with VSTi in the same fashion as I would work with effects...!!! Just tried it, worked perfectly. Thanks guys! And, Jeremy, we did talk a lot about 18 months ago. I used to have all sort of problems with Metro. Those days are gone! :D Everything is working perfectly now! Thank you for the good work on updates!

arbastien,

Thank you for the kind words. It is funny you say that though because I recently came across a couple of problems when dealing with Subsections and Soft-synths. These issues will be addressed in a subsequent update. However none of them affect you if you use the soft-synths on an Aux Buss or if you do not use subsections. They all deal with having Soft-Synth on tracks.

Another thing to remember is that if you have Soft-synths within a subsection, it is a good idea to have the output port of the track that contains that subsection assigned to a soft-synth as well. In other words, if I have Subsection A that contains the soft-synth Claw on track 1 then in the parent section, say the verse, I want the track which contains the subsection event (to Subsection A) to be assign to 'Claw' or any other port so that the track type is not regular MIDI.

The reason for this is because Soft-Synths must be pre-parsed to stay on time with MIDI. This have been fixed so that it does not matter in versions after 6.2.1.7 (unreleased as of this posting).

I don't think there is a good explanation on how to implement this on a midi track. You can only use the AUX busses on ports, not on tracks, so the midi track needs to give output to a port. However, you don't want it to be a synthesizer port, because only the AUX bus should synthesize. Neither can it be an audio port, since all midi data is lost when you change the output of a midi track to an audio port.

So how exactly do I make my midi affected by the aux buss?

>>Midi data is lost when you change to an audio port?

If you switch back to midi, the data is still there.
If you're talking about converting a midi track to an audio aiff, why do you need the midi data in it? You can always record to a different track and keep the original data.

The concept of the aux bus is to change the MAIN popup to AUX1 in the Mixer window and turn up the faders on the tracks you want it allocated to.

For instance........Sampletank sitting on the aux bus has 16 channels.
You can allocate piano to 1, bass to 2, guitar to 3 etc. inside sampletank's window.

Change from internal to sampletank in the mixer and turn the main volumes down on the tracks and the auxess up. You will then only hear the aux sound.........and like you say only the aux bus should synthesize.

Ah, why didn't I think of that? I knex how everything worked, but never got the idea of just turning the volume down on the main track. Thanks!
