Rewire again, if you can stand it

Postby cornutt » Thu Jun 09, 2005 9:09 pm

Got a question about Rewire. I'm running the Metro 6.3 pre-release and I just brought up a pretty neat drum machine application called Archibald. Now I'm trying to tie them together with Reason. There shoudl be three things happening: (1) Archibald creates a MIDI input so that it can be sent preset changes. (2) Archibald syncs to Metro. (3) Metro gets Archibald's audio output.

The situation: (1) works, but (2) and (3) do not. I went back and read the other recent threads on how Rewire works in Metro, and I think I understand it, but I don't see that happening. As I understand it, there should appear an aux bus that is tied to Rewire when Metro recognizes a Rewire slave application. I don't see that, and when I go to "Modify Instruments and Buses", and look at the choices for creating aux busses, "Built-In Audio" is the only available choice. I can choose "Archibald-1" to create MIDI channels on, and that works. Also, in the "Rewire" menu under Special, it says "No Devices". I'm assuming this means that Metro isn't seeing something that it expects to see.

Having said all that: I think that the problem is in Archibald. It doesn't seem to go completely into Rewire mode; there are some things that the help file says are supposed to change when Rewire is active, and I don't see that happening. Nonetheless, I wanted to give you a heads-up that it could be some kind of mutual interface problem. I have already written to Archibald's developer, and I'll report on what he says. (He's in France, and it's the middle of the night there right now, so I'm not expecting a response right away.)

Is this program freeware? If I can get a copy I would like to investigate this from our end.

It's shareware. You can run it in demo mode. I downloaded it from MacMusic.org.

Well I downloaded it but it produces no sound at all even standalone. Perhaps it is an issue with Tiger. I did notice that because of the fact that it cannot be launched that Metro shuts down Rewire and no devices are allowed. This issue will be fixed in 6.3.1. Archibald will appear as a device as long as adrewire is selected in its audio output dialog.

Actually, I'm still running Panther (10.3.2). I do plan to load up Tiger sometime in the next few weeks.

I have been successful in getting audio out of it, but right now I only have the built-in audio to use. My 828 is packed up with most of the rest of my studio, because we're getting ready to move.

Okay I was able to get sound out on panther. Apparently this app is a max/MSP app. I installed it on my powerbook which has no rewire apps and I get the same thing you get. Then I noticed there is a status window. In this it says:
====================
coll: finished, 6 lines
Mode: UNREGISTERED
Audio: ON
Clock: ON
Clock: 0
coll: finished, 692 lines
print: 0 1 2 0
print: 0 1 2 0
print: 0 1 2 0
coll: finished, 1 lines
Unable to load ReWire DLL.
• error: ad_rewire: please check ReWire installation and restart Max/MSP.
Clock: 1
Clock: 2
Clock: 3
Clock: 4
Clock: 5
Clock: 6
Clock: 7
==========================
Apparently the installation does not install the ReWire DLL. To get this to work I suggest downloading the Reason Demo and installing it. This will install the needed ReWire components.

Okay, I'll give that a go.
