remapping drum pitches to instruments

Postby cdade » Sun Mar 23, 2003 6:59 pm

as suggested by Jerm I'm posting this as a Feature request; the original topic is from a Metro General Qand A question included below :

I'm not sure whether it would be useful to many others; or whether I'm tryin to get a lot of mileage out of old equipment. Perhaps the new drum machines have that editability built in.

Yet, I still think that it would be useful at the sequencer level because one could save all kinds of percussion sets. In fact depending how you implement it, there could be sets that include patches from other channels containing sounds that are not necessarily conventional percussion sounds . (Think about that G3 flutelike sound in Sting's "All This Time" that come across as percusion ever so often).

I think the way, I originally thought of it being implemented was similar to the scale reassignment "using Map" in the Transpose dialog box.

But with further thought I'm thinking that there could be complimentary save-able sets.

That is, There could be a "save-able" input scale reassignment for the entry during recording to get the midi instrument to play the desired instrument sound based on the limited scale set of the triggering device (in my cae the dd-5) so that the human player can enter it intuitively(musically) and get the right feel.

Then a save-able inverse "transpose scale to" reassignment set cound be created to convert (tranpose) it to the conventional chromatic scale assignment of the playing device (An SC-88 for instance) and with this more evolved idea.. across different channels as well.

I thing that the Transpose Using map could include a drop down list of the saved sets for reassignment after recording.
and in the Tracks window the transpose column could include a drop down list that would contatin a method to select the scale the input scale. alterrnatively it could be implemented tinthe transport window with abutton like the punch-in or metronome.

Perhaps you should post a feature request in this forum. The only way this would be possible currently would be if your controller keyboard had such a function

I'm trying to figure out how to remap pitches..during recording.

Let's say I want to play an E2 and have it come out as a D1

I want to be able to record the sounds real time remapped.

How do I do it.

Here's the problem I have an old drum machine with 4 pads (a Yamaha DD5) that are transmit A2 D#3 E2 A1 only.

I want to set up the pitches to play the sounds I want to hear during the recording (as opposed to tranposing them later) so that I can get a could feel.

Here's my setup

PowerMac 7100/80 56Meg Ram running 7.5.5.

Yamaha DD5
Metro 5 OMS 3
A Roland SC-88
GSAE 2.5.0

Korg DW 8000
Roland GR-1

Though I've been using various flavors of Metro fo a few years (with quicktime instuments) I just recently acquired the SC88 and the GSAE 2.5.0 so I'm guess I'm getting a bit satuated(I'm feeling increasingly stupid).

Anyone have anything similar that can give me a hint.

Now that I think about it further...

Isn't is possible to go into the destination synthesiser and create a drum set. In this drum set you would map the sounds you need to the appropriate keys. I think this would solve your problem and is exactly why they allow users to make up their own drum sets.

This is what I got for a response when I asked this question to a member of the Sound Canvas Users Group:

"On your other question, looks like the SC does not support internal remap of the drum parts. This is normally done with sequencer software like cubase where you can enter a drum map and point the out going key on events to any other note you desire."

Cdade,

What about this as a compromise since it would be fairly easy to implement? If the remote control window (RC) had an output option for note then incoming notes could be assigned to outgoing notes by inserting a record into the RC window. Then a preset could be saved for particular devices with all the desired notes in it.

Of course this would not work for SE users because there is no RC in that version.

This was so easy to implement that I added it to 6.05i7. It has the added benefit of allowing a single note to map to a chord with two (or more) remote control events where the source events are the same note.

For example. c2 -> c3 for event1 and c2->d#3 for event2 would play (and record) a c minor when c2 is pressed.
