Importing a .ins

Postby buserror » Sat Feb 15, 2003 8:15 am

Trying to import the SC-8850.ins takes 15 minutes. FIFTEEN MINUTES on a dual Ghz machine, with 1.5Gb memory.

What is it doing? The CPU is idling, and the progress bar is crawling.

Not only that, but it's not saved as a global setting, and I ALSO have to re-import it for the 'B' channels.

Doesn\t seem to keep the settings anyway. All I can select is "general midi" and that seems to be saved properly. Event the provided SC-88 Pro .ins takes 10 minutes to load, and is not saved anyway.

Can't help, but I can commiserate. I get the same results on my lowly G4/500. Plus, I've found some SC-8850.ins files (I found a number doing a Google search) don't display properly in the drop-down menu pane once they've been imported. The pane simply doesn't appear, and I sort of have to "mouse around blind", hoping that I'll magically pick the right bank definition on the invisible list (if that makes any sense). And, like you, I have not been able to get these settings to stick from session to session, anyway. Kind of a showstopper for those of us w/ non-GM modules.

I think this is a bug, but it's kinda hard to tell, given the less than-fully-clear documentation for this panel. (God, I miss Vision's 1200 pp. of .pdf manuals).

For program name files to be persistent, one needs to:

a) make sure they have at least SE version 6.0.3
b) save preferences after importing any .ins files.

We will take a look to see why the import is so slow. Please point me to the .ins file.

Thanks,
Jeremy

Wow, that was frighteningly fast. You can try the SC8850 files at
ftp://ftp.cakewalk.com/pub/InstrumentDefinitions

Program Name TIP!

Postby Jerm » Sat Feb 15, 2003 1:26 pm

Another tip, although not directly related, is a way to remap program name lists so that they can be assigned to another port.

If you hold down the option-key when selecting a bank from the bank popup in the track window or graphic editor window ALL banks will show up. Selecting from this list will reassign the selected bank to the current port.

We have found this problem. In the next bug fix release SE 6.0.4 it will take less than 9 seconds to import this file. Note this problem is OS X only.

Just for the record, for anyone who runs across this thread, I feel compelled to point out that Jeremy managed to find this bug and fix it in less time than it takes to import the file in question. Color me impressed.

Ah fixed, good. I suspect the loop was too busy drawing the progress bar to get any proper work done. It's rather typical of carbon ;-)

Now I just have to wait for 6.04, as Evan says, it's a bit useless at the moment.

Is the "invisible popup window" fixed too? I had that several times as well.

Thanks for fixing bugs on saturday :-)

Yes. The progress bar... exactly. Well, that plus the time it takes to get back to the app.

What is the invisible popup? :? Can you give me concise instructions on how to repeat this problem?

Well, after having waited the 15 minutes required to import the SC-8850 file, most of the time (but not always) clicking the popup to see the bank would do nothing.
However, clicking, draging and releasing the mouse WOULD change the selected bank name to somthing else, kinda like the popup window was there, but invisible.

It is not reproducible 100%, sorry

I do not know if this is related or not but you should definitely select the port that you want the .ins file assigned to before importing.

Yay! I'm not going crazy!

Well, at least not in this particular respect:

This is exactly the problem I had. I believe it was 100% reproducible (for me), given the same .ins file. I found a number of SC-8850 instrument definition files on the web, and I think at least one of them did not display this behavior. Unfortunately, they're all named either SC-8850.ins or roland.ins, so I can't remember which is which at this point.

I did figure that one out, but it certainly strikes me as poor UI design - at some point you may want to really overhaul this panel, but just reversing the "read order" of the two menus would surely help.

loading INS file

Postby fastlanephil » Sat Feb 15, 2003 11:32 pm

I'm using Metro 6.0.4 under OSX (opps this is the SE forum) and it loadng slowly also. I chopped out all the proteus banks that I didn't need and that got it down to 100 seconds.
