Apple AUs not working

Postby jukehouse » Sat Mar 12, 2005 1:26 pm

Since upgrading to Metro 6.2.5 my audio tracks have been unable to find the "built-in" Apple AUs.

No problem finding Roomverb or SFX Machine effects but when I drag one of the Apple AUs into the Effects/Synths window for a specific track, that track goes silent. If I Bypass the the Apple AU effect or delete it from the Effects/Synth window the track comes back on.

I checked to make sure it is routed correctly in the Effects/Synth window (i.e. from the correct audiotrack and to the correct channel in the mixer) and it does appear to be.

Try it on a new track and see if that works. Works fine for me. You should also try restarting your machine.

If the problem persists, you might want to try running Disk Utility and doing a "repair permissions" on your system disk. Early versions of OSX had lots of problems with this. I haven't seen it happen since I've been running Panther, but it's possible that an older installation package somewhere messed something up.

still not connecting

Postby jukehouse » Sun Mar 13, 2005 8:55 am

I tried a new track & restarting. Still doesn't work. I ran a Disk Utility and some of the permissions needed to be, and were corrected but still no cigar.

It's only the Apple AUs that are problematic except for the Apple AU Matrix Reverb; That one seems to work okay. The SFX Machine and Roomverb plug-ins work fine.

Here's something else, when I go back to an earlier vesion of Metro (6.0 or 6.1) the Apple Aus still dont work properly but rather than causing the track to become silent, it causes the track to become "digital distortion" whether the AU is active or bypassed.

When you restarted, did you reboot or just log out? Logging out is not sufficient. What is your audio device? Have you updated any system software recently? What OS are you using?

Rebboted

Postby jukehouse » Sun Mar 13, 2005 10:47 am

I rebooted.

If by Audio Device you mean my I/O device, I'm using a MOTU 2408.

Using MAC OSX Version 10.3.7

Not sure about any recent updates since I share the computer with my son.

Try using built-in as your audio device to rule anything with the MOTU device.

Tried

Postby jukehouse » Sun Mar 13, 2005 11:35 am

I may not have been as clear as I need to be on this.

This was an attempt to add effects to an already recorded audio track not an attempt to add Apple AUs while I was recording an input.

None the less I switched to Built-In Audio Input device (if what shows up as L R or L+R are the built in Audio Input devices) and this made no difference.

Again, if I hit the "bypass" switch in the Effects/Synth window with an Apple AU loaded , I get the sound back or if I move the "Dry" slider in the Effects/Synth window all the way up (and the "Wet" slider goes all the way down) I get the sound back

Oh yeah

Also went under "Set Up" to "Digital Audio" and then to "Device Options."
and switched the output source to "Built In Audio."
The sound started coming out of the CPU rather than thru the board but the same thing happened; That is, no audio from Apple AUs

Ah HA

This seems to be an important bit of information.

If I set up and AUX bus, it can find the Apple AUs. That is the Apple AUs function properly thru an AUX Bus but do not function properly when applied to an individual track

Okay I was able to reproduce this. To work around this problem, first mix the track(s) to stereo using mix or render audio tracks. It has to do with mono in and stereo out.

I am investigating further to see where the problem lies....

You should not have to. There is a problem when setting some of the Apple Audio Units to one input and two outputs. Apple is not returning an error so Metro assumes it is ok but I guess it is not. The Apple AU's seem to be incapable of outputting good results in any configuration other than when the number of inputs and number of outputs are equal. You can tell the number of ins and outs by noting the black circles before and after the plug-in in the effects window.

I am still waiting on a response from the Apple engineers as to whether this is an Apple bug or something wrong in Metro. From my reading of the documentation it appears to be an Apple bug however the documentation is a big vague in this area.

That's cool about the black dots.
I've never noticed. :)

The way I lose effects....

Add a VSTi, add the matrix reverb and then remove the VSTi. It turns your port to 'off' as the instrument is no longer on/open. Then stick the VSTi back on the track and you get a dialog box warning that no sound can be produced.

I just delete the VSTi and reverb and remount them in order and it fixes it okay. Probably not the same problem but a trap for the unwary.

This problem has been addressed and fixed in Metro 6.2.7, as of yet unreleased.
