Automated Mixing

Postby jukehouse » Thu Jan 20, 2005 12:11 am

When Mixing to track with several audio tracks that have had their volumes changes automated, is it necessary to enable the record function in the Mixing Window in order to get the automated volumes to take effect in the mix?
ALSO
It seems that automated volumes are automating AUX volume sliders for channels that have been added to an AUX Bus. How do I avoid this?

Definitely not. That button should only be pressed when you want to record automation. Automation will play in the mix if the play automation button is on. Master fader automation is the only thing that will not be incorporated in the mix.

I am not sure I understand what you mean. If there is volume automation within the section you should be able to delete it in the graphic editor. If it is effect automation (not in SE or LX) then you can clear it by ctrl-clicking the effect in the effect window and select 'clear all automation'.

If you want me to take a look you could email me the Metro file. Don't bother sending any audio files.

Just as a test I placed an audio file in metro.
Threw the matrixreverb plugin on the aux.

Recorded automation of the 'main' fader just taking the fader down it's length to zero over about 5 bars.

Viewed this and it was ok.

Selected Aux1 and wanted to record a fader slide up.
As soon as I hit play for recording the automation the fader jumped to the max and I had to grab it, take it down and move it up.

When you play it back you watch the fader jump between the 2 settings (I'm guessing it's displaying the main and aux1 position at the same time. Is this expected?).

If you are looking for the aux volume and you're looking at the aux in the graphic editor, you're looking in the wrong place. This is for other internal settings for the effect like wet, dry, bypass, compression.....etc.

Finding the volume of the aux

- look at the audio track (not the aux)
- open the popup next to the number of bars (usually saying AUDIO)
- choose 'Send Vol:'
- choose the aux number you're on and your data appears.

you can select all and delete.

Automated Mixing with AUX bus

Postby jukehouse » Thu Jan 20, 2005 11:19 am

Okay , so your description of the Aux setting for a specific channel jumping between 2 settings is what Im seeing.

So lets say for instance I automate the volume changes for vocals on track 1. I then create an Aux Bus and assign reverb to that Aux Bus. When I choose the Aux Bus 1 from the Main selector (upper right hand corner of the Mixer Window) the slider on Track 1 (my hypothetical vocal track) returns to 0 (zero). I then move that slider to add the amount of reverb I want on the vocal track. So then as the section plays I watch the track 1 slider (with the Main selector {upper right hand corner of the Mixer Window} set to AUX Bus 1 ) and notice it is jumping from where I set it to another setting.

So my question is: Should that be happening or should the AUX setting slider on my hypothetical vocal track remain in one position ?

Yes, this is a bug. It should not move the fader when in the mixer is in Aux mode unless there is aux automation. Fixing.....

Fixed.

To get this fix you will need to upgrade to 6.2 ($29) to get the pre-release (which is 6.2.3) which is expected to go out before the end of next week.

Automated AUX bus Volume

Postby jukehouse » Sun Jan 23, 2005 9:11 am

I upgraded to 6.22 yet the problem I am experiencing with AUX bus volumes continues.

Here it is: Any track that has its Main volume automated appears in the AUX bus at the volume set by the automation. I can pull it down manually but it comes back up. Or vice-versa: Pull it back up but it comes back down if that happens to be the case.

Interestingly this has only occured in AUX bus 1 when I had 2 AUX busses set up. At least thus far anyway.

In tracks with automated Main volume for which I have set the AUX bus volume, the AUX bus volume also responds to the automated Main volume setting. Again, so far this has only been on AUX Bus 1.

I tried automating the AUX Bus Vol Send to zero to see if that would hold it down but it does not if the tracks main volume is automated.

That's because it is fixed in 6.23 which hasn't come out yet and Jerm said that it is coming out soon. Read Jerm's post above starting with 'Fixed'.

When such a release comes out it may have just a couple of fixes, but most of the time there are a heap!

What I don't know is when this bug appeared........cause I'm sure it wasn't there a few versions ago. I guess this is the problem with major updates and features that probably create more nightmares. :x

Oh yeah, that's right.

I forgot that bit that Jerm had said about the fix being in 6.2.3

Thanks
