Increasing volume in final mix

Postby fastlanephil » Wed Jan 19, 2005 3:06 am

I see you can unarchive the final mix and increase it's amplitude to increase the volume if it's not quite loud enough. Then it archives itself again. Is this a good way to do a quick volume increase. The resulting QT file seems to sound ok.

I am not exactly sure why your final mix is archived in the first place. The best way to increase the volume and preserve the sound of the piece is to use normalize. If the piece you are doing contains too much dynamic range, meaning you want more volume in the quiet passages, then you should probably use some kind of compression or dynamics plug-in to increase the volume.

Thanks for your help again. I thought that the mix down track being archived and shown as muted but still playing was kind of strange. I probably have done something to create a glitch with all my fumbling around as I learn how to use the full potential of Metro and it sure can do lots of neat things. I'll do a quick mix down test later with a few tracks to see if it was an anomaly or if something else is going on. I am spanning to another monitor with the video hack but I dot' see how that could interfere with anything in Metro. Possibly a CPU or RAM condition?

PS
No quiet passages in this demo. It's a basic three minute verse chorus song and a few twists with classical origins but kept pretty simple. Meaning you can hum it. Neo-classical pop I quess.

Not strange if it's going through an aux or something similar.
Think of it as - oops..........having a port on when you thought it was off.

you could remedy this with adding an output to the audio ports and moving the track there with the popup.

I think that's what youre talking about. :)

That was it all right. I'm using a Tascam US-122 and you have to unplug it to have a built-in audio port out. But it can work either way I guess. Thanks.
The Tascam sure beats the mess I had before with two small mixers and cords every where. I'm going to start a museum of old music devices some day.

I would have thought you get the drivers and everything for the Tascam happy in the audio/midi setup and then you launch Metro and allocate some outputs to built-in and the tascam.

In the modify outputs and aux busses dialog box, a trap for young players is having the box ticked to replace existing. This would clear all other outputs.

From a starting setup this is ok.

You could setup say 10 to internal, 10 to audio, and 10 or whatever to the Tascam. The more you allocate.........the longer your mixer window is.
 BUt you can drag faders along and place the used ones next to each other by grabbing their name and dragging them along.

I reset audio/midi so that built-in audio was the default and the system output but when I launch Metro and go to the Modify Outputs And Busses set up, built-in audio is not in the pop up list for outputs. If I quit Metro and go pull out the Tascam US-122 and relaunch Metro then built-in audio is available in the Modify Outputs And Busses pop up menu for outputs. It does the same thing with my M-Audio Transit. It looks like you don't have the option of built-in audio when using a USB audio device.

I know you don't want to check the replace option unless you want every thing to disappear in the output column. Been there-done that.

I didn't know about the fader name dragging. I'll have to try that.

What's the digital audio setup show in the Setup menu?
Can you switch options there?

There is also the device options button as well.

I know the audioin is working off what is known as direct support.
Does the tascam run off ASIO?

Can you run both together?

Iv'e tried all combanations and the mix down track archives as soon as I start playing it. Isn't ASIO for pre OSX. It's not an option any way. I'll have to fiddle with it some more and try to see what's going on.

In all versions of Metro, tracks are auto archived when the maximum number of audio tracks is exceeded!

SE = 8, LX = 16, Full version = 64

Subsection audio tracks are counted for each instance.

I suggest you select the entire final mix track, cut it and then paste it into a new section via the sections window. It will then play fine.

Yes, I guess I got a bit carried away with it. So you add up the tracks in each subsection to total your audio tracks. I unarchived the mix down and cut and pasted it into an empty section and it plays fine.

Now to break the 64 track barrier can't you take that mixed down stereo track and just keep adding more midi to audio tracks to it and keep mixing down to a stereo track until dooms day or a democrat is elected president.
So the possible number of previously recorded tracks combined into stereo tracks and layered with more tracks and continually mixed down can be infinite?
