I tried iDrum, and have to admit for a bit shift plug, I was some what dissapointed. I guess if I spent more time on it... The sounds were poor.. I suppose importing other sound is possible.. but.. for all the trouble, I'd rather stick with V Samp. The best drum sounds I've found so far (drum roll) Garage Band. Still, it's kinda tough to get Metro to midi trigger them tho... Takes 2 macs, conneted through a midi port between the two, slaving... on and on.

Scoot or any iDrum users know an easy way to make it GM compatible to use as a GM drum sound playback plug-in? For instance, if you have a midi drums in one of Metro's tracks, to be able to play the midi from the sounds generated by iDrum. This looks to be possible, just wondering what the easiest way to do this would be.

The easiest way would be to create a iDrum drum kit using the standard set of drums (as opposed to custom). Once completed you can change sets by option-selecting the other drum set to transpose to close to the same drum sounds.

When you say standard set of drums, I assume you're talking about the standard General Midi Drums. I'm not understanding what you mean when you say "change sets by option-selecting the other drum set to transpose to close to the same drum sounds". Can you explain this with more details.

This is what I'm trying to do. Most of the sounds that come with iDrum are the synthetic drum sounds for dance music, and I don't want everything to sound like that, so I want to create a more "real" acoustic drum set that is General Midi Compatible. I want to be able to load a midi drum pattern into Metro, select iDrum and be able to hear the pattern with the new "GM Drum Set" in iDrum.

This is what I've tried so far.

1. I created a blank "default.idrum" set.
2. For starters I just want the basic GM drum kit that consists of "kick, snare, HH, OpenHH, Toms, cymbal, etc.", so I load them into the iDrum.
3. This is the part I'm a little confused about. How to get the sounds that I've loaded to match he general Midi information from the Metro track with the midi drum pattern?


Hope this makes sense. I know iDrum is not a Metro issue, but I think Jeremy or someone knows how to use it better than I do, so thanks for your help.

No I'm not an idrum user but I do find things that I think may be of interest and report them to the forum.

I've downloaded idrum again to see what I can come up with. I think I know what you're asking and here is the scoot way of doing it. If this is not what you're wanting then I misunderstood the question. I'll write 2 messages for 2 different methods.

Import your drum track into Metro and choose a drumset that matches your import (you you click on the snare you hear the snare etc).

In my example I used GMidiKit.

Open up the 'Drum Sets...' and select from the popup the set you're using.

Note the numbers alongside each drum in your track.
In mine 36 = Bass Drum-2 and 38 = Snare Drum-2

Install idrum onto the track and install the sounds you want to use on it.
Then click the 'i' info button I have highlighted yellow and choose the idrum's Bass Drum you're using and change it's popup number to 36 as in the picture. I'd already mapped the KOTOR Snare.aif to 38.

Match all your other drum sounds and then idrum with play the correct sounds on the metro track.

Install idrum on a track and set up the drums you want to use for the midi data.

Click on a drum's name.......in the drum section of the graphic editor.
It highlights the notes of that individual drum.

Goto Notes and click and drag a note to where you want it on the octaves.....and all the other ones will move as well.

It is a bit simpler than that and a little setup will help to convert similar files in the future. In the final step instead of dragging the notes, you should create a new drum set that corresponds to the iDum sounds. This is very easy to do in the drum set editor if you select the iDrum track first because then the audio icon can be used to audition the drum sounds as you create the new drum set.

Once you have an iDrum drum set you can option-click on the drum set of the original and select the iDrum set. This will transpose all of the drums in one fell swoop. It is important to use standard drum names when creating the iDrum set because the transpose drum feature works best when it recognizes similar standard drums like snare and hi-hat.

Where do you "option-click on the drum set of the original and select the iDrum set"?

Do you mean in the Graphic Editor on the left where you can select the drum set? I can now select the iDrum Set that was created, but it doesn't option-clicking. Is this what you're talking about?

Regardless, this has been really helpful information to know.

Yes, the upper left where you select the drum set. First import a standard MIDI file, select drum view and a GMIDI kit, then option-click on the drum set and select iDrum. All of the drums will be transposed from the GMidi kit to corresponding drum sounds in the iDrum kit.

Here's what Art from Glaresoft says about iDrum and GM:

"You can just set up a GM mapping using the midi-note (or auto-map--much faster) features. For example, to put a kick on C1, load up a kick sample in an iDrum channel, open the info drawer and set the midi note to 36 (or just hit auto-map and press the key on your keyboard). You could quickly build up a gm kit this way. Once you've got it set up this way, then you could easily trigger it via a GM midi file in your host sequencer."

You're right, Jeremy, but since it is incorporated into Metro as an AU and users such as Scoot and you know more than me, I like to cover all of my options for information. :-)

The GM mapping information from Glaresoft looks to only work with iDrum when it is used a standalone program, not while in use as an AU, so you'd have to set up your GM info before using in Metro. Correct me if I'm wrong.
