Pitch Bend Sour Notes

Postby Drumkit » Sun Oct 10, 2004 2:08 pm

When importing a Standard Midi File into Metro, I've discoverd that tracks with a lot of pitch bend data produce sour notes. However, if I play the same Midi file in in Quicktime, the track plays perfectly. Can anybody please help me resolve this issue? Thanks.

Drumkit,

Email me the file and I will tell you.

Usually this would happen becuase, believe it or not, Quicktime is not playing the file back properly. It is very easy to leave pitch bend on a track and not reset it after using it, making notes after the pitch bend sound out of tune.

I received the MIDI file and the results are pretty much as I would have expected.

Try this in Metro.
• Open up Metro, LX or SE (6.2.1.7 or greater) .
• Load the MIDI file.
• From the graphic editor select 'Apple:DLS MusicDevice' from the track title bar plug-in Popup.
• From the setup menu, select change ports and change all ports from internal to 'DLS MusicDevice'

Now when you play it back it sounds just like Quicktime player in terms of the pitchbend and everything else for that matter.

Using the internal ports is not recommended.

The other advantage of using the Apple:DLS MusicDevice is that when you are ready, you can simply make a selection and then convert that selection to audio via the file menu's 'Mix or Render Tracks'.

- so does that mean qt is buggy?

- doesn't respond properly?

- doesn't read pitchbend?

This is my understanding. Of course I have been wrong many times before so take it with a grain of salt.

It would actually be interesting to know when or how often the QT instruments have been upgraded. I remember them being around in QT 2.5 or thereabouts.

With all the upgrades and enhancements to quicktime in streaming and codecs, maybe the instruments get a little ignored......they work so don't mess with it.

Seems surprising for apple who seems to be so deep into the music industry.....then again if they make em too cool you wouldn't need to buy anything else. :)

Then again Tiger may be a different story altogether.

Jerm,
Changing the ports from Internal to Apple:DLS MusicDevice produces no sound. I should mention that I am using a GM Sound Font bank placed in the Library\Audio\Sounds\Banks folder so that these sounds automatically replace the default QT sounds. This has been working great except for the pitch bend issue.

On a somewhat related note, will Metro remember the DLS MusicDevice port assignments in the same manner as it does now when I’m using the Internal port assignments saving midi files as follows: After editing a midi file, I export each as a Standard Midi File - Type 1. Then I can then make up sets using the SMFs in any order (blocks of 8 per SE limitations)......or will I have to save each file as a Metro doc?

This can be corrected by double clicking on the aux 1 fader name in the mixer window and setting the correct output port in the edit-output dialog that appears.

The default port when importing a MIDI file can be set by simply selecting 'edit-original' from any track output popup and selecting the correct MIDI port. To default to DLS MusicDevice, simply select it in the edit original dialog.
