Hey Scoot,
I call it a minor glitch, because the program can be restarted without loss of any of the work done.... A major glitch would be like when I was messing around with MixMan. I would go to change a loop in a given track, and the computer would freeze up, calling for a hard boot (turn off computer and restart). This would of cource mean a total loss of all work done.

The loops are easy, just go to the Library/Application Support/GarageBand/AppleLoops folder and drag them to Metro. The synths aren't as easy though. Maybe impossible.

I have been fooling around with Garage band 1.1.0 recently and it is so painful. If you have a lot of audioUnits it takes about 10 minutes to start up at least initially (no exaggeration).

I have not been able to quit without it crashing so perhaps it will start up faster after I can quit.

I had to move some audiounits out of the components folder just to get it to start up.

It took me quite a while to figure out how to edit a soft-synth. Once the editor is opened it is always in front so you have to close the window to do anything.

I could not figure out how to enter notes with the macintosh keyboard. I was able to enter using the onscreen MIDI keyboard during record. Editing seems extremely limiting.

Other than that, the loops of course are very cool. Except if you want to do something in an odd time signature, or even not so odd like 12/8.

I would write more but I am still waiting for it to finish starting up.

I just finished a suite of six songs for a friend of mine who is the chair of the University of Iowa Dance Department. He used the music for a solo Multimedia/Dance/Theater production. The entire piece was recorded using GarageBand and the Jam Pack. I, personally, have never had such a good experience. I certainly did not experience the 10 minute loading time Jerm mentioned in the previous post, and I had more than 10 sounds loaded. I did not, however, use any AUs other than the sounds and effects that ship with GB and JP. I was also using version 1.1.0, rather than 1.0. I used a single 1.8 GHz G5.

Overall, I had a great experience. Yes, there are some limitations... but for an entry level MIDI and digital audio recording app, I'm impressed. And there are some professional applications for GB as well... since I got paid for my work.

GarageBand vs Music Mouse

Postby fastlanephil » Sun Jun 13, 2004 8:59 pm

I used Music Mouse for back ground music at one of my brothers weddings with hundreds of guests. Fooled them didn't I.

I recently got NI's Kontakt 2 and with it you can load Apple loops. You can load all the sampler instruments (not to mention Rex, Acid, SF2 and other file formats) and then load filters or even convolution effects to spice up the garageband sounds. This plug-in is unbelievable and it has been very stable which is a lot more than I could ever say about Kontakt 1.
