VST/Rewire instruments selectable from Graphic Editor

Please post any ideas for new features in Metro or Metro SE here.

VST/Rewire instruments selectable from Graphic Editor

Postby braj » Mon Mar 15, 2004 9:00 pm

I'd like to see selecting instruments for Midi tracks simplified for 6.2, specifically I'd like to see the ability to select the plug-in I'd like to use selectable from a drop down list in the Graphic Editor window. I'd like to also select my bus from this same window (basically everything you need to set up VSTi's would be nice here). The Band and Pgm # already exist here, I think it would be much more intuitive to be able to work on all aspects of a track from this one location. Maybe a button to bring up the Effects/Synths window when necessary specific to the current track.

I hope it's relatively clear what I'm asking for. My biggest gripe with Metro is dealing will all the various windows. Eliminating the need to switch around would help a lot.

This is a very good suggestion. I should say however that it is not trivial to implement.

Yeah, I guess it may be a big deal. But IMO Metro has plenty of features, any future changes should be to make those features more easily accessible. I don't know what you plan for the future, but I think the UI should be the primary focus for upcoming versions. All my issues with Metro have dealt with usability, not it's feature set.

I agree. I had a post somewhere in the forum with a poll about changing the UI for effects and software instruments. Unfortunately, I think the post was a victim of the server change. I lost that post and a few others, but I haven't bothered rewriting them. Ease-of-use should be one of the priorities for future updates.

Also... I think it would be a good idea to have a bundle of plugins with Metro. Maybe one of the SampleTank banks would be appropriate. I know that it would cost more for a package deal, but it might a good idea to have some sort of package for novice...or even experienced... users. Maybe there could be an add-on price for Metro (any version) with SampleTank LE (possibly OmniSynth). I wonder if IK Multimedia would work out a deal with Metro... hmmm?

With an improved user interface and a soundbank included it could be like a GarageBand for the rest of us... to steal a line from Steve Jobs. :D

I could see some softsynth vendors happily including a reduced 'demo' version with Metro.

I would like to get some assistance here as to what you guys want to see.

The easiest way to implement this in a basic way would be to have a popup menu containing all soft-synth plug-ins that when selected would load an instance of the plug-in. The plug-in would then load differently depending on its multi-timbral setting in the plug-ins window.

if multi-timbral:
The plug will load on an aux buss, 16 outputs would be created and the first output would be assigned to a new track.

if not multi-timbral:
The plug will load on a track, 1 output would be created and assigned to a new track.

Sounds good.

It will be nice to see.

If you can create a popup for the VSTi's, can you create a popup to a folder that contains your soundfonts?
