Metro 6.2?

Postby braj » Sat Feb 28, 2004 6:49 pm

Jerm just mentioned 6.2 having Rewire support and the possibility it will be a paid upgrade. I'm curious what else will be included besides Rewire and how much the upgrade might be. Right now I'm using three apps (Tracktion, Metro LX, and Reason 2.5) and I'd like to slim that down to two (Reason and whichever DAW is more usable for me). Right now Tracktion has much better loop handling, but Metro has a much better piano roll sequencer. Tracktion 2.0 (a free upgrade as I understand it) is coming soon (May?) with substantial upgrades to the piano roll, so I'm wondering what upgrades Metro will provide, and will they be included in the LX version? And how much will the upgrade be (if any)?

Right now we're thinking about around $15. SE will not have Rewire, so it will be free.

That's pretty reasonable. So, any info on upcoming features? Will instrument handling or loops get any tweaks? I'm not sure if Metro supports Acid or Apple Loops, is that coming?

Well, it seems a bit difficult to get documentation on Apple Loops. Apparently it is not an open format. I also do not know much about Acid files. Do you have documentation on that. Your questions would be better suited for the feature request section but yes 6.2 will have better loop facilities. I guess how much will be your next question.

6.2 will import loops and automatically set the tempo of the document to match the imported file. As far as loop matching and slicing up loops we will have to wait and see.

What can't you do what you want in Garage Band? Then if you need to use Metro, can't you export the Garange Band output as an AIFF or something?

I'm not using GarageBand. When I spoke of Apple Loops, I figured that it was a technology you could get access to. SJ said it was an open format, and I know a bunch of companies are now making loop libraries. And Acid is definitely open, so if you supported that only, I'm sure it would be enough. I don't have any info on Acid either, but then it's not my job to understand the technologies involved with DAW development.

Anyway, if Metro will allow loops to be stretched and automatically get snapped to a bar so they link up without having to tweak the start/end points like you do now, that alone will be a vast improvement.

ReWire & OS9?

Postby rlwilliams » Tue Mar 02, 2004 12:45 pm

Jeremy,

When ReWire comes, will Metro be compatible with OS 9? Right now, I would love to be able to use Ableton Live Rewired to Metro, but I can't afford to buy a new computer just to use OSX.

Just curious.

Thanks,

Ronnie

Ronnie,

It is getting increasingly hard to support OS 9. I think 6.2 will still support OS 9 but am not sure at this point. The LX version currently does not run under OS 9 and will not.

Please Rewire for OS9

Postby rlwilliams » Tue Mar 02, 2004 4:33 pm

Jeremy,

Thanks for your reply. Please incorporate Rewire into Metro for OS9. I can afford to give you the extra $15, but I can't afford to buy a new computer at this time.

Thank you for the consideration.

Sincerely,

Ronnie

Hey Ronnie,

I don't think Metro will ReWire to Live because they are both considered "mixer" apps. ReWire requires that only one mixer app run at a time. As many devices as you want can be run at a time though. So Metro will ReWire to Reason but I do not think it will to Live.

Hi,
I was curious too. When I looked at the Ableton site, they stated that Live is also capable of being slave. From version 2.1. That is if you first set up the mixer application properly for Rewire. So I would say it will be possible to use Metro and Live "Rewired".

I am sure Casper knows more about Live than I do. If Live can be a slave then I stand corrected and it should work with Metro.

I'm really glad Rewire is coming. I assume Reason will respond to tempo changes, etc, correct? How will the Rewire channels be handled, like Effects/Synths? I would love them to be selectable from the Graphic Editor window (actually, I wish all VSTs allowed this). I'm trying to use Reason exclusively for synths lately, and having to go through all the various windows (including Reason) to set a track to use Reason seems a lot. It would be nice if it could be done with as few steps as possible.

Well the current implementation is each reason channel is a Metro port. This is because in ReWire each channel has a name.

Reason will follow Tempo changes.

You can convert ReWire MIDI data to audio and more exactly like a VST instrument.

Metro automatically uses/allocates an aux buss for connecting to ReWire. All of the ReWire output is routed to that aux buss.

There is an on/off switch and a switch for disconnecting transports. This is useful if you do not want Reason's sequencer to run but still want to use the synth sounds.

There is also a Quit/Panels and stop ReWire menu option.

I hope that means it may happen :D

Anyway, any news as to when to expect the update?
