No External Midi Found

Postby kaboombahchuck » Thu Dec 11, 2003 7:36 am

Hi everyone.

Got my new G 5, running Panther, downloaded Metro 6, set up my midiman 2x2 with latest driver, Found it in midi setup, setup the alesis nano, and the yamaha vl70-m, ran test, all is good and right at this point (I guess). Open up Metro, and no external midi is found. Is this a midiman driver issue, or is it something I'm missing in Metro, or something in the midi setup?

It will be pretty easy to find out. Simply run Audio MIDI Setup (from your utilities folder). If the device shows up then it is a Metro problem and if it does not then it is not.

I have heard of problems in 10.3 with the MIDIMan drivers. Here is a topic with multiple pages:

That's the 3.1 driver is it?

It's not exactly new and a lot older than Panther.

Is absolutely nothing appearing in the midi setup dialog in metro?
It should bring up PORT A or PORT B to record from or the name of the midi device in AMSetup.

The problem I had (in Jaguar) was the 2x2 stating it was currently offline.
It was sort off greyed out.....even though the connecting cables were still present in the audio/midi setup.

It would also play the notes on the graphic editor back into the external synth but would not allow me to record from the synth into metro.

The problem was fixed by shutting down the mac for a minute or to and then starting it up. Very strange fix......in a world where everyone now just sleeps their macs.

Jerm - where is your grey hair? Are we not as stressful as we thought?

I have set up the external midi devices in the midi set up window, and have ran the test, and signals were recieved by both devices. I'm assuming that meens the drivers and such are working. I'm not sure if I have corectly saved the midi setup. With OMS there was a "make current" command. Is there something simular with core midi?
Metro finds no external midi, so I have no way to comm with the synths. Although I found your shut down fix humorous, it did not work. Funny thing, in OS 9, running Sound Diver 3, there would be not external midi found, I would unplug the USB cable, then reconnect, and all was well.

Did you go to special:modify outputs and busses and manually add the devices?

Do you see anything in the port pop-ups if you try?

What does you MIDI Setup AMS look like?

I've come to the conclusion that it must be the driver.
I took a look at modify output pop box, all that appears is internal, off, and audio.

The midi setup shows the 2x2, and the 2 devices connected to it. However, when I did a rescan the 2x2 went grey (like what Scoot was describing). I shut down the computer, and it showed up in full color, then after rescanning, it went grey again. BTW, I also unpluged the USB cable, then reconnected it, and the icon (2x2) showed up back in color. Even when the 2x2 shows up in color, Metro still does not find it. The devices connected to the 2x2 stayed in color, but would not respond to the test midi command. Anyway, pretty much sounds like the driver is goofed.

If it does not respond to AMS :( it will not respond to Metro either.

Are you running the 2x2 driver or the universal one that you download from M-Audio that works for a number of devices?

I think there is a difference.

I'm using the the universal one, and think my offline problem was due to the mac rather than anything else.

I would not go round plugging and unplugging to trouble shoot.
You won't get very far.
Make sure everything is on and ready when you startup.

Problem solved! I left the less than desirable midisport conected to the iMac running OS 9... went to the store and got a Motu FastLane... Every thing went smooth. No problems what so ever. Exactly the way it sould be!
