Reason and Metro?

Postby braj » Sat Jan 03, 2004 4:07 pm

I have a chance to buy Reason 2.5 cheap, but want to know if Reason and Metro can work together (and if so, how well?).

Metro has audio which is more important to me than anything Reason has, so it isn't a choice between the two, but as an accessory to Metro. Also, I only have Metro SE, if that makes a difference.

OK, I have Reason now but I don't really understand the app (nor am I sure I want to invest the time). I'm most interested in using the synths and samplers, is there as way to trigger them from Metro? Does anyone else use Metro and Reason together? I think it would be cool to use the drum machine from Reason, can it be set up to write to a Metro track?

OK, here ya go... Try jack @ http://www.jackosx.com/ Download it and try it out, give us some feedback on it. See if it works for Garage Band also.

I'll try it, but I was hoping for something along the lines of having Metro send Midi to Reason, or vice versa. I'm glad I only spent $50 on it though (it was a partial gift, buddy needed $50).

I'd just like to use the synths and the step sequencer, and I like the TR-like drum interface, it's really easy to enter in drum patterns quickly. I just can't see myself wanting to use it as a stand alone product beyond messing around with it. It is pretty cool though. I wish all AU/VST synths fit into a rack UI format, it makes managing many devices a lot simpler.

Soundflower 1.0 is way easier to deal with than JackTools, and I have gotten it to work beautifully using Reason into GarageBand. But when I try and do the same with Reason into Metro, it isn't available. I'd rather use it with Metro since GarageBand itself is so taxing on my system, let alone running it with Reason.

If anyone else can get this to work with Metro, let me know.

I installed Soundflower 1.0, rebooted and it did not show up at all on my powerbook 667. I then shut down, turned the machine back on and then Soundflower showed up as 2 devices, a 2 channel device and a 16 channel device. I was then able to record directly from iTunes into Metro by specifying Soundflower as the default device in system preferences and selecting soundflower in the digital audio dialog of Metro.

That's weird, because I didn't need to go into System Prefs to get Reason/GB to work.

Odd. It did work. But I'm concerned if this will affect using the Line-in jack in Metro or other apps. I'm at work now, so I can't test this out. But thanks for helping figure it out. It's nice to have a line in from Reason. I wonder if there is a way to get Reason and Metro to sync? is that possible?

The correct way to do this is ReWire, which we currently do not support. There are technical reasons why we do not currently support ReWire right now, however we are going to take another look at how much effort is required to support this under OS X in the near term future.

I wonder if there is any way to work around it. Both apps allow me to receive a sync from an external device (right now, MidiKeys. At home, and Oxygen8). Is there any way to send a sync from either of these devices, or possibly a third application?

Well,

Metro will send the necessary sync and MIDI clock information to the selected CoreMIDI port. If you can configure Reason to create/receive on a virtual MIDI port it might work. I don't have Reason installed but if it does not create/receive on a virtual MIDI port Metro could create a virtual port. I think I tried this a long time ago and it worked but there were complications.

OK, thanks, Jerm. It sounds too complicated for me right at the moment. Maybe I'll just try matching tempos and adjust the results to be in sync. The main thing I wanted was to use the samplers and synths, and that much has been accomplished.
