Quicktime instruments sound bad...

Postby sseaton » Mon Feb 24, 2003 2:16 pm

Can someone tell me why Quicktime instruments sound bad... I'm guessing it is because I do not have a sound card. I'm just using the audio out (with headphones) on my iBook. Thanks in advance.

The default sounds got a lot better with later quicktime version if you can beleive that.

You can download and change the default sounds quite easily: Go to http://www.macosxhints.com and search for SoundFont. I've posted an article a fe wmonths back on how to use any soundfont to replace the quicktime default ones.

SF2's sound good

If you are using OS X, you can follow our links page to the soundsite where you can download some huge SoundFont General MIDI sound banks that have some really nice sounds in them. You can then use them with Apple's built-in Soundfont player (I recommend on an aux buss). Sounds way better than the default quicktime sounds.

Thanks... and one more thing...

Thanks. I just put the soundfonts in Libray/Audio/Sounds/Banks. These soundfonts work well, but I notice some latency, although slight. The Quicktime sounds didn't seem to have as much latency. The soundfonts I'm using are GM/GS banks and are between 12MB and 24MB in size. They do sound much better! Any advice on Latency? I'm using an iBook G3 700 MHz with 128 MB of RAM.

Latency

Go to digital audio setup and change the audio packet size. This will reduce latency but will tax the processor more.

Thanks Jerm. My problem was that I was using soundfonts incorrectly. I'm not having problems anymore. Thanks for the tip on audio buffer packet size. I have noticed an improvement with a slightly lower setting. I also noticed some problems with too low of a setting. I believe I set this number to 512, and everything is fine. Setting it to 128 was way to low, and I had internal sound performance problems with the low setting. Thanks again!

Hi all,
I recently downloaded those Quicktime " soundfonts" with the
help of another post I saw here. I filed them in a "Banks" folder as instructed
and selected on as default in Quicktime prefs.
Is there a way to use these instruments in Metro, if so, how, please... thanks...
